Avamar Disaster Recovery Testing - with a Grid offline

We have two Avamar Grids.

Clients Group A go to Grid A (backups replicated to B)

Clients Group B go to Grid B (backups replicated to A)

In the event of Grid A going down, how can we force deactivation of clients on Grid A so that they can be registered and activated on Grid B? Again this is Grid A being offline. We have not been successful. Every time we try Avamar client baulks and says it is already registered with Avamar Server A.

These are all Physical Clients/Plugin Based. VMs are easy.

Our objective is to powershell a script that does a bulk deactivation and a bulk activation. Clients would be located in the same domains on both Grids.

Hello Matthew1970,

In the Avamar 7.4 Administration guide under the Replication section there is a section titled Moving a client to a new server

This is the summary for that section:

To manage an Avamar client through a new Avamar server, move the Avamar client's registration, activation, and backups to the new server.

Before you begin Do the following:

  • Add the target server to Avamar Client Manager as described in Adding an Avamar server on page 302.
  • Select a client that is activated to a server with Avamar server software version 5.0.1.31 or newer.
  • For a client activated with an Avamar server older than version 6.x, fully initialize the MCS process on that server.

The Avamar Administration guide can be found at https://support.emc.com/docu81547_Avamar-7.4-and-Service-Packs-Administration-Guide.pdf?language=en_US.  The section I mentioned above it located on page 328 of that guide.

Let us know if you have any more questions.

Mark
