Avamar avtar backup/restore capabilities?
I'm new to Avamar and currently running 7.2.041. From what I've read using avtar for backups/restores unless absolutely necessary should be avoided. My question is, is it at all possible to potentially restore files from one client to another? As in, could you use avtar on server A and restore files from server B to it or initiate a backup?. From what I've seen, that wouldn't be possible as you wouldn't want someone to have the ability to restore files from a server with sensitive information to another. Trying to grant admins the access to perform file level backups/restores with avtar on their own servers looks to be a headache. Trying to avoid any potential administrative nightmares in granting rights and permissions while managing backups.

This reply glosses over a fair amount of important detail.
While it is possible to run avtar and manually restore data that belongs to another client, it's not like the barn door has been left swinging in the breeze. In order to restore from a client:
Typically, access to clients is controlled at the Avamar domain level rather than assigning privileges to users at the individual client level. It's also important to note that bare avtar backup and restore does not support the GUI's LDAP Maps feature, so if you're assigning privileges to users or groups using LDAP Maps, these credentials will not work when running avtar backups or restores from the command line.

Restore to another client is possible, however backup from another client is not possible.

One limitation I ran into. If you are running VMware image backups, and attempting a file level recovery, you cannot restore those files to a different client.
