Avamar AVE using incorrect timezone
Hello,
I currently reside in the U.S. and I built an AVE in our Hong Kong location. When I built the server I told it to use HKT for timezone but when I create a schedule the system thinks its in EST. Why does my schedule show EST timezone and how do I change it? Also, the maintenance window screen is correct it just insists on using the wrong timezone in the schedule. Could it be grabbing the timezone from where the admin console is launched ?
See attached.
Thanks.

I've also heard of customers (especially large customers) setting up dedicated management systems in each timezone. That may be overkill; it really depends how many administrators are accessing the systems, the availability of resources, etc.. Neither of these is really a great option but it's probably easier than trying to do timezone math in your head.

Schedules are managed in the timezone where the GUI is running. I know this isn't ideal.

Backup schedules are managed in the timezone where the GUI is currently running regardless of where they were originally created. The time zone setting in the maintenance schedule is there for your convenience, so set it as you will. There is no technical reason it needs to be set to one time zone or the other.

So, If I created the scheduled in Hong Kong, the schedule would be stamped with that timezone. Then, I can manage it from the U.S? or does it always flip to the timezone of the current GUI session. As you can see from the attached images, the maintenance window shows Hong Kong time, unlike the schedule which shows U.S EST time. Should the maintenance window be set to U.S time to match the schedule?
Thanks.

When you start up the GUI, it queries the timezone of the system on which it is running. This is the timezone it will use when editing backup schedules.
For example, let's say you start the GUI on a system in Hong Kong and create a schedule that runs from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, the schedule will run from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm Hong Kong time. When you start the GUI on a system in the U.S. Eastern Timezone and edit this schedule, it will show that it runs from 4:00 am Eastern Time until 7:00 am Eastern time.
If you then change the schedule from the GUI running on the system in the Eastern time zone and set it to run from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, the schedule will run from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm Eastern. This may not be behaviour you expect.
I hope that clarifies things.

I know an administrator that scheduled several servers in different timezones across the world. If he was going to work on a server in Hong Kong, he would switch his PC's time zone to Hong Kong, Run the GUI, do his scheduling, exit the GUI, and reset his timezone back to his home location.

It does, thanks. I only want to manage all of our locations from EST. So I will adjust the schedule to make up for the time difference.
Thanks.

What I mean is, If I create the schedule with the admin GUI launched in the local time zone. Then, later, I open that schedule from a GUI running from here in the states, will the GUI change the timezone from local to U.S or does it leave it as the timezone the schedule was originally created in.
I'm confused when you say where the GUI is currently running. The GUI isn't always running. We do our admin duties and close it. Unless we're not talking about the same GUI.

Thanks. I will just have to do the timezone math.

I'm not certain on that. I have not tested it.

Ian,
If I am not mistaken, can you use the Enterprise manager Console Interface? Would it not use the Timezone of the EM server? Or does it use the time zone of the client browser?

I just tried this. the EM serves doesn't have a way to add a schedule, or anything else for that matter. All I see is a "Launch Administrator" button. This just opens your local thick client.

I think what Jeff had in mind was using EM to launch the management GUI and checking what timezone the GUI starts up in.
