Avamar Advanced Retention Policies - Independant of daily/weekly/monthly schedule?

Hi ECN, I hope you can clarify something for me.

I've recently taken the Avamar Management course and one thing I took away from this was that no matter what your schedule is set to, your backups are tagged according to date not the type of schedule, and that Advanced Rentention Policies apply to these tags and NOT the type of schedule the backup was taken from.

As an example:

Schedule 1: Daily between 19:00-07:00

Schedule 2: Weekly set for Mon,Tue,Wed,Thur,Fri,Sat,Sun between 19:00-07:00

From my understanding, these two schedules are identical in functionality.

The very first backup of a client taken by this schedule will be tagged as Y,M,W,D. Each subsequent backup will be tagged as D, unless it's a Monday, in which case it's W, or the first of the month in which case it's M. The next backup on January 1st will be tagged Y.

This means that I can set a Advanced Retention Policy to either of these schedules with the following settings and get exactly the same outcome:

Days of daily: 14

Weeks of weekly: 4

Months of monthly: 6

Years of yearly: 1

In my mind, this will give me 14 daily backups to roll back on, 4 weekly backups to roll back on, 6 monthly backups to roll back on and 1 yearly.

The reason I'm asking this is because EMC were conducting some troubleshooting on our pre-implementation Avamar grid yesterday and said I needed to use Daily Schedules to have a backup tagged with a Daily tag, a Weekly Schedule to tag a backup as Weekly and so on and so forth.

Please let me know if I'm right or wrong!

Many thanks,

Craig

Tags are assigned as you've described (a new weekly on the first day of the week, a new monthly on the 1st of the month, etc.). You do not have to use a weekly schedule to get a weekly tag.

Many thanks for the prompt response Ian - that has put my mind at ease on that one.
