Avamar 7.1 and vSphere 6

Does anyone have official word on Avamar support for vSphere 6? When vSphere 5.5 released, we upgraded immediately and while Avamar didn't officially support 5.5, it worked. Being that vCenter upgrades are pretty one-way, I'd kinda like even an "unofficial" word that it works (and on what build). We're on 7.1.100-370 currently.

Thanks,

Chris

The recent Avamar 7.1.101-145 release includes an updated version of the VDDK library that's required for hotadd to work with vSphere 6. I haven't seen anything official on whether vSphere 6 will be supported (the release notes for 7.1 SP1 aren't available yet) but you're likely to have backup performance issues if you upgrade to vSphere 6 and leave Avamar at 7.1.100-370 or 7.1.101-141.

The official announcement  about what may or may not be compatible with Avamar 7.1.1-145 and VSphere 6.0 will occur shortly after the GA release of VSphere 6.0.

Certainly VSPhere 6.0 is not compatible with 7.1.1-141 or earlier versions of Avamar.

Avamar upgrades must be performed by the EMC Remote Change Management (RCM) team. I have removed several posts from this discussion because they provided instructions on how to retrieve the upgrade files and it would be bad if somebody inexperienced found them and shot themselves in the proverbial foot.

Please contact EMC Support for upgrade requests and issues.

The instructions sent by EMC support tend to be wrong and do not include the firewall disabling step. Customers are instructed to download these files, so it should be permissible to mention here.

Please update the RCM team so they give the right info so that customers don't have to come here and ask (valid questions)

Thanks,

Chris

I apologize, I think we may have had some miscommunication. trappamed is talking about downloading files for a new installation. exponenthr is talking about downloading upgrade files. I removed the previous posts thinking that the instructions were for downloading the upgrade files which is information that is normally sent by the RCM team in preparation for an upgrade. These instructions generally should not be posted publicly because the procedure could be updated at any time and we don't want older versions floating around on the forums and potentially causing confusion.

I reviewed the document and it gives instructions for customers and partners to prepare for the installation of a new Avamar single node system. I would recommend downloading the AvamarBundle to a workstation and copying it to the new Avamar node form there. In the past, these preinstallation steps were normally performed by EMC or an authorized partner.

I was overzealous in removing the previous posts. Again, I apologize.

thank you for your quick answer and advices,

but, as per  the document:

EMC® Avamar® Data Store Gen4S

Single Node Customer Installation Guide

P/N 300-999-651

REV 03

page 27: we should get the bundle of AvamarBundle_SLES11_64-VERSION.zip and copy it to /usr/local/avamar/src/

FYI, the avamar server can not go over internet to retreive the  bundle, I should retrieve it first, before involving EMC's personal

So, I believe that my question is legitim, isn't?

It's not officially supported but an earlier EMC comment in this thread said that -145 brought a newer VDDK that should be more compatible with that of vSphere 6.

Ian,

I see the release notes for 7.1.101-145 was released, but there is nothing in there about vSphere 6 support. Is it there something I'm missing here?

We decided to upgrade our grids to 7.2.1-32 a few weeks ago in preparation for version 6 of VSphere. Many enhancements include better CBT as well, so I would suggest scheduling an upgrade to a version of 7.2.
