Avamar 7.0.1-61 Image level backup failure
Hi All,
I am trying to do an Image Level Backup, ESX 5.0 and 5.1. Avamar Version 7.0.1-61 Image proxy version 7
When starting the backup it fails with the errors:" 2014-04-23 15:29:46 avvcbimage Error <14671>: The file with extension '.vmx' could not be located on the VM (Log #1)
2014-04-23 15:29:51 avvcbimage Error <14671>: The file with extension '.vmx' could not be located on the VM (Log #1)
2014-04-23 15:29:56 avvcbimage Error <14671>: The file with extension '.vmx' could not be located on the VM (Log #1)
2014-04-23 15:30:01 avvcbimage Error <17804>: Max retries for downloading VM .vmx file exceeded, count=3. (Log #1)
2014-04-23 15:30:01 avvcbimage Error <17821>: failed to download vm metadata, try later (Log #1)
2014-04-23 15:30:02 avvcbimage FATAL <0000>: [IMG0003] The VMX '[DataStore]
VM/VM.vmx' could not be snapshot. (Log #1)
2014-04-23 15:30:02 avvcbimage Error <0000>: [IMG0009] createSnapshot: snapshot creation failed (Log #1)
The error code in Activity is 10007.
Troubleshooting DONE SO FAR:
- I have tried by adding attribute: Attribute: [avvcbimage]x22 Value: 8192 (referring to older versions having the problem with .vmx files : Same result
- Tried to take a snapshot of the VM on vCenter: it is succesful.
Please advice on how to approach this issue and possibly fixing it.

Hi robsnyder,
Thanks for your reply, the problem turned out to be a sillier one, the user account was at root level, however, was as "virtual Machine user" instead of Admin, had them change it, and its working like it should. Completed successfully, thanks for your reply which had me go and check the user account on vCenter.

The account in VCenter used for processing image level backup, did you verify it has the correct vcenter access?
See page 29 in the EMC Avamar 7.0 for VMware User Guide.
"The user account must be added to the top (root) level in each vCenter you intend to protect."
This is a change from the previous versions of Avamar.

Hi Rob,
We are using Avamar v7.4 (for server). The account in VCenter used for processing image level backup is added to root and has admin role. However, we have backups that complete, that fail with below mentioned error
2017-07-24 16:02:35 avvcbimage Error <17821>: failed to download vm metadata, try later (Log #2)
2017-07-24 16:02:35 avvcbimage Error <0000>: [IMG0009] createSnapshot: snapshot creation or pre/post snapshot script failed (Log #2)
2017-07-24 16:02:35 avvcbimage Error <0000>: [IMG0009] createSnapshot: snapshot creation/pre-script/post-script failed (Log #2)
Is there a way to resolve this issue?
