ADMe use case/installation process
Hi,
We recently deployed an IDPA along with a set of VxRails in a fairly static standalone environment. During deployment we found out that IDPA doesn't inherently provide any mechanisms for external off-site archival backup. Our original plan was to export some form of backups/snapshots to external hard-drives which could be archived as desired by the customer.
I've been researching our options and came across Avamar Data Migration Enabler (ADMe), which looks like it should do exactly what we need. Now my plan is to have ADMe directly stage backups (Likely just the most recent) to an external hard-drive connected to a client computer used for administration purposes. This hard drive can then be archived as necessary, and can be used to recover in the event of catastrophic failure if both the IDPA and VxRails are lost. I'm not sure what sort of schedule it would be run on at this point, but I would guess something like monthly, and I'm assuming that this would be a manually initiated documented procedure, rather than an automatically scheduled one.
There are some logistical details I still need to work out, like determining how big of a drive we'll need, and ensuring the drives we use will be compatible. But I think at this point it will be easiest to get it installed and experiment with it a bit to see what will work for us.
From what I've read, the installation process doesn't seem too difficult, at least in our specific usage case, since we won't be doing tape backup and won't need it to interface with networker or other backup software. I've read through the instructions and feel comfortable enough with the process that I would feel okay about installing it myself. However, I see lots of mentions of Professional Services engagement all over the ADMe supplemental page, additionally the mailx and ksh rpms, and installation passwords referenced in the readme are not accessible externally.
1) Do you see any specific issues with my currently planned usage of ADMe?
2) Does installation of ADMe require PS engagement? Or is there any option for customer installation?

PS is typically required especially when a Tape AP is involved as there are deliverable tasks that are not performed by tech support. You are correct in suggesting in your case since no Tape AP is involved you can probably do the install and setup yourself.
Please reach out to me directly adam.kirkpatrick@dell.com and I'll assist you with the initial install and setup.

I'll also add that the IDPA is a DP4400 if that happens to make any difference.
Thanks!

Ideally ADMe should be initially deployed using PS. Your suggested use case of ADMe to stage to disk such as USB disks is supported and will work fine. Disks presented using iSCSI also work fine with ADMe. I suspect that your plans would be to act against specific clients and specific backups such as first or last of the month etc. so to determine the amount of disk required it would be basic math to add up the aggregate size of the desired backups.
If you were to send these backups to a Tape application via ADMe you would require less staging disk space as once the data is written to tape ADMe will quick format the disk to be used for additional data.
