ADMe (migrating GSAN backup to AVA/DD setup)
Hi all,
Anybody with some ADMe knowledge please step forward
Case:
Customer have a ”old” 1x10 grid and tech refreshed this grid with and Avamar 1x3 combined with Data Domain solution. They need to migrate data(Monthly & Yearly backups) from old grid GSAN backup to their new grid onto Data Domain. They would like to have backups stored on the Data Domain. According to the EMC Avamar Data Migration Enabler v. 7.3 this is possible using ADMe
I’m testing this in a non-production environment at the moment where I just want to migrate a GSAN backup from Avamar G4 7.8 TB node to an AVE with Data Domain attached. Same version of Avamar 7.3 is running on both source and destination Avamar.
Src Avamar = av01
Dst Avamar= ave01
Staging server= tfa-util02
Client to be migrated=tfa-util01
- I have installed ADMe on the src Avamar and configured the Enviroment files accordingly to the ADMe User guide.
- Client group configuration is configured accordingly to the Guide as well. For testing purposes I’m just trying to migrate from one client and only monthly tagged backup.
I have started the migration and can see its running to the staging server and data is actually being migrated/restored to the staging server
I just can’t seem to figure out how this is being migrated to the dst Avamar / Data Domain. It’s not explained in details in the guide or perhaps I just don’t understand how this work.
- Is the migration actually just a restore from src and a backup on dst? Meaning if customer has 50 TB of data we have to restore all of this and then backup them up afterwards. All this backup will then be under staging server on dst Avamar and not actually under the migrated clients name
- If the above is not the case how will I tell the ADMe that backups should be written to Data Domain?
Hope above makes sense or please tell and I will try to explain further

Hello Thomas,
The use case you are referring to here requires unique setup which is not documented in the ADMe User Guide.
It is mentioned there for awareness only but requires EMC PS for it to be deployed properly.
The configuration steps are documented in a separate pdf available from the ADMe home page.
“ADMe Procedure for migrating Avamar GSAN BU's to a Avamar->DD storing them in the DD”
I can also see from the screen shot of your environment files that Env-1 is not configured,
this must be configured prior to establishing any additional environments.

Hi Adam,
Thanks for fast reply.
I found the document that you refer to and will have a look.
I will make changes so that Env-1 will be my first configured enviroment file.
I will update you with my progress
