Adding nodes to Avamar grid

Hi,

Wondering if someone could provide a high level overview of the process to add nodes to an Avamar grid. I have generated the procedure from the EMC PG, but not all steps are clear. Currently have a Gen 4 grid at code level 7.0.101-61. We need to add (2) Gen 4S nodes to the grid.

1. Generated PG for “Capacity Upgrade”. This procedure tells you that the nodes must be configured with an IP address and be assessable on the network. I am assuming this means run the other procedure to “Add Hardware” and choose “Expansion” node. I am unclear on where you stop during this process. Do you simply configure the IP via YAST and stop? Do you have to run dpnetutil (this was used during initial installation)? Do you use AVinstaller to load the software?

2. The new nodes have different OS loaded? How would this be synced up with the existing grid? There is a section in PG for patches, but nothing referencing OS level.

3. Is there a simpler process, maybe using AVInstaller?

Any help/guidance would be appreciated.

Hi,

As outlined in the procedure please make sure you have completed the necessary training /mentoring and that you are approved to add in nodes before attempting to follow the procedure. Doing the node add incorrectly could lead to data loss.

1. If you generate a procedure "Add Hardware" and "Expansion node" and select "No" on "Do you require Avamar Software Installation Procedure" you should follow through all of the procedure on top of the procedure you should also set up bonding, generally this can be done easily by copying the configuration from an existing node ths KB may also be useful. The outline should be:

  • Physically installing there Avamar Nodes
  • Using YAST to give the node an IP address
  • Set up bonding on bond0 (eth0 / eth2) and bond1 (eth1 / eth3)

You do not need to run dpnnetutil again.

You do not need to load any software on the new nodes, the necessary binaries will be copied over when you run the start.nodes commands.

2. There will be different OS levels between Gen4 and Gen4s nodes, that does not matter the OS levels will not be synced up. What is important is that the capacity of the new nodes is the same as the old nodes.

3. There is no "AVInstaller" process avaialble for node adds at this time, the solution in the EMC Solve desktop should be followed.

Again all of the above is ONLY if you have had the necessary training  / mentoring and are approved to complete node adds, if you have not please contact you local EMC contact for further assistance.

Regards,

Adam
