x17 R2/x15 R2, BIOS 1.24.0 BIOS fail to install

Alienware x17 R2

Alienware x17 R2

Is this a known issue? Since I've received the email about this "critical" update, I've tried d/l from the dell support website, and today it's finally showed up in the support assist app. However, bitlocker on or off, this won't install. Always returns the driver version fail. Current BIOS is 1.23.0 Anyone else have this issue?

Resolution

All impacted BIOS versions have been removed from availability through SupportAssist, Dell Update, and Alienware Update.

Updated BIOS versions that resolve this issue have now been released.

To ensure your system is up to date, please download the latest BIOS directly from your device’s Drivers & Downloads page on the product support site.

Same issue with mine.  On the previous bio, will not update to Alienware x15/x17 R2 System BIOS - 1.24.0

I wonder if Dell Support moderates this forum or if it is more crowd-sourced, and one of us should call Tech Support and then share the findings here.

Free GHN (Get Help Now) Dell Technical Support could not address this unless you still have warranty on the system.

My opinions. First, I would never install a BIOS update on any system that is currently out of warranty. Second, I would never run a BIOS update through Windows and software (SupportAssist, etc.). I would run the BIOS update file from a USB key.

From the 1.24.0 page =

Installation = Updating the BIOS from DOS with UEFI boot mode enabled (Non-Windows users, Load Legacy Option Disabled)

1. Copy the downloaded file to a bootable DOS USB drive.
2. Power on the system and then go to BIOS Setup by pressing the F2 key.
3. Go to General > Boot Sequence > Boot > Boot List Option.
4. Change UEFI to Legacy of Boot List Option.
5. Go to Exit > Save Changes and reboot system.
6. Press F12 and then select USB Storage Device and boot to the DOS prompt.
7. Run the file by typing the file name.
The system restarts automatically and updates the BIOS at the system startup screen. After the BIOS update is complete, the system restarts again.
8. Go to BIOS Setup by pressing the F2 key and go to General > Boot Sequence > Boot > Boot List Option.
9. Change Legacy to UEFI Boot Option.
10. Go to Exit > Save Changes and reboot the system.

Hi everyone,

Please note that there are a few changes in the current workaround for the BIOS update issue. For the latest instructions, please refer to the updated solution on this thread.

Having this same issue with 1.26 in May of 2025.  Uninstalling those updates isn't possible.  Hope a new solution is figured out.
