x17 R2, failed video card vbios update

Hello all community members,

I'm using Alienware x17 R2 and trying to update my VBIOS for 3080 Ti laptop from version 94.3.19.00.44 to 94.03.19.00.DB. I downloaded "RXT3080Ti_VBIOS_Flash_v1.0.0.0.exe" from Dell x17 R2 support page. But it just gives the following error message even though I have the most recent SBIOS version 1.11.

Is there any possible solution for this?

Hi @Resludens

I am currently running BIOS 1.11.0 on my AW x17 R2 and I was able to update the vBIOS of my 3080 Ti. The steps I took were:

  1. Extract the files from "RTX3080Ti_VBIOS_Flash_v1.0.0.0.exe" using 7-zip with "Open inside #". The vBIOS is the file named as just "4". You can download it from: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1F62nWJO65QJckYfaV4FmkIo0Wp60fpjy/view?usp=share_link
  2. Download an updated nvflash64, you may look here: here https://www.techpowerup.com/download/nvidia-nvflash/

After the step 2, you can try two methods:

  1. To update the vBIOS you need to disable "Memory Integrity" on Windows 11.
ERROR: Detected "Memory Integrity" is enabled. You MUST turn off "Memory Integrity" prior to start program. It can be accessed via Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation details > Memory Integrity.
After restarting the Windows, you need to open "cmd" or "powershell" and run:
    "nvflash.exe -6 3080ti.rom"
  2. The method I used was go to BIOS and set:
Advanced → Enable Hybrid Graphics → set to Disabled
Security → Secure Boot → Secure Boot Mode → set to Audit Mode
After that I used a liveCD with WinPE (in my case it was the "Jayro's Lockpick") and from there I ran the command:
    "nvflash.exe -6 3080ti.rom"
    from cmd.exe

Hope this helps.

P.S.:

  1. the -6 is to force the vBIOS update process
  2. I recommend to save your current vBIOS using:
    nvflash.exe --save backup.rom

Hi @Resludens welcome to this free user-to-user Alienware laptop discussion forum.

To ensure the integrity of your file download, please verify the checksum value. Use the free MD5 & SHA Checksum Utility or similar to verify the checksum value.

Hi Crimsom.

I have just verified the checksum value with the utility you recommended. All three hashes - MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 - have matched perfectly.

Hi @Resludens thank you for sharing update.

Please plug in ac adapter, ensure battery has more than 10% charge and remove all USB connections.

Repeat the installation of Alienware x15/x17 R2 System BIOS version 1.11.0 followed by Restart (not Shut Down) so that this change is saved. Then repeat the installation of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Firmware Update Utility version 94.03.19.00.DB, A01 followed by Restart (not Shut Down) so that this change is saved.

Check invoice to see if Alienware x17 R2 was purchased with Dell warranty. If under Dell warranty and if RTX 3080 Ti Firmware Update still not updated, click on Contact Technical Support and request online session so that Dell diagnostic tools can be used to determine and fix installation problem.

If still under warranty, click the Get help now icon on the right of this web page to start a live chat session.

Hi, crimsom

I followed every step you mentioned, but unfortunately, it didn't work.

Before being here to seek help, I already contacted Dell Support Team. They recommended I do sBios Update rollback and give one more try for vBios Update, so I tried sBios rollback to 1.10 but it didn't help me much.

It seems I have two options: to keep doing rollback to an even earlier version or to extract ROM file from vBios exe and use Nvflash with it.

Any helpful instructions for those two options?
