x17 R1, does a cooling pad do anything?
Can somebody explain to me the air flow situation on this machine? I cant seem to find an air flow diagram of the machine at all. I see the two side vents let heat out. There is some sort of vents on the bottom I am assuming pull air in and there's vents on top that pull air in correct?

Heat and ventilation are issues with pretty well all modern thin laptops. You might want to do what I did:
I took a strip of lumber, about 3.5 cm. wide x 2 cm. high (1.5" x 3/4"}, and the length equal to the width of my laptop. I routed out two notches to accommodate the laptop's rear feet. The rear of the laptop sits in those notches, propping up the rear by 2 cm. That provides better ventilation underneath the laptop and makes it easier for the fan to draw in air via the bottom vent.
It's cheap insurance, and also positions the keyboard at a slight angle that makes typing more comfortable. It won't solve a major heat issue, but it helps somewhat.

Hi @LeeD70 welcome to this free user to user Alienware laptop discussion forum.
Cold cooling air and dust enters into bottom and top vents. Hot air is pushed out of rear and both side vents, but dust collects inside laptop vents and leaves a coating of surface dust on the system board. See following generic image.
The laptop gets hot and placing on wood tray or table with elevation of rear base improves air flow and removal of hot air. Local ambient air temperature should be low and not excessively humid. A captivating wire frame is useful to maintain laptop elevation of rear base. Alienware x17 has four internal cooling fans. Consequently, a generic or customised forced ventilation cooling pad with fans has a marginal benefit IMHO.
Visit Views of Alienware x17 R1 to see all external vents.

Can anyone acknowledge that question with facts and truthfulness ?
I talked to a Dell tech and he told me the air comes out of the bottom which contradicts the pictures in this post. I mean the Dell tech is supposed to know, right ? ? ?
Anyone know ?
O and fyi, these fans I used for my M17 R2 made very little difference on heat dissipation for my M17 R2 like someone mentioned on this post.
Thnx for any help if u reply.
