M18x R1, possible GPU upgrades? #2

Hi,

I own an Alienware M18x R1. I want to upgrade the GPU on it. I have got a different CPU which is an i7-2960xm.

Any idea what the best GPU can be fitted. I have looked at other forums and they say its the 880m.

But these are old forums, is there anyway of fitting a newer GPU in it.

Thank you in advance.

Hello, yes the 880M is currently the best Nvidia GPU that can be installed, or two in SLI. This is due to the R1 BIOS not having proper UEFI support and newer cards have a requirement for this in their vBIOS'. I know a guy that is currently working on trying to get around this but for now the 880M is the best option. The 8970M (R9 M290x) is the best AMD option but I've seen people having issues getting Crossfire to work so a single 8970M will have to be it.

Thank you for the reply. No worries I will continue with the 880m.
Will I have to do anything with Bios, I think my bios is A05 I believe.
If I fit 2 880m will that improve the performance for gaming instead of one?

sorry for all the questions

thank you once again

Talk a look at this video on how to do the upgrade. The only thing you may have to do that isn't in the guide is disable the HD Audio in the BIOS but hopefully you won't have to as it's tricky getting the sound to work again. This is a requirement with the 780M/880M upgrade in the M17x R3.

SLI will help in a lot of older games to boost performance but it won't do much for games past around 2016. The 880M won't be strong for newer games anyway and the cost for two of these cards will make the upgrade quite expensive. MXM cards keep their value compared to desktop GPUs
