m18 R2, Win 11 24h2 update

Alienware m18 R2

Alienware m18 R2

Hello. My M18R2 is the only PC in our household that is not yet updated to Win 11 24h2. How can I find out what is holding it back? All drivers and bios are updated. I also checked the firmware of my SSD drives.

You may need to install it fresh as some software stacks are at risk of BSOD

Thanks. I really want to avoid that. I was hoping that the Dell people keep track of which of their drivers block the windows update. Or, if it is specific to my system, have a method to diagnose the blocking configuration.

This is what I get when I try to upgrade from 23H2 (OS Build 22631.4602) to 24H2 using an ISO image. Does anybody have any idea which driver(s) are causing the update issue yet? I get so hopeful every new driver release but no luck so far. I have been getting BSODs daily that seem to be caused by the ntoskrnl.exe since mid November 2024.

On older machines you will need to install 24H2 fresh with a Rufus fixed installer

Windows just installed 24H without my permission  but I just checked it out and my M18 R2 with Adobe Premier Pro and it is up and running with Nvidia 900 series graphics card. Thats all im worried about. If I do find anything I can rool back within 10s of update. So, so far so good. Good luck 🎲 everyone. Microsoft really pulled a fast one on me im upset at that. Usually it asks me if I want to update OS. Angered me.

My Alienware M18 R1 didn't have Windows 24H2 available as an update but I did run the pre-check tool Microsoft put out to test that your PC can

upgrade to 24H2 and mine was fine to upgrade.

When I did I got a BSOD and the data transfer failed 2X's.

I lost all my Laptop data as well.

I ran an sfc /scannow..no HD issues

I brought my PC to a repair shop.

I'll ask about particulars there today

Microsoft has put 24H2 on general availability now that most of the kinks are ironed out

The update appeared on my machine yesterday. I installed it and all is good now. Very intransparent behavior from old MS I say.

It didn't work for me even after I downloading the MS pre-check tool showing me I was in the green and having installed 23H2 with no issues prior to. It cost me $195 to wipe out my drives and install 24H2.......no data was saved by the way.

Always image your Operating System partition daily. You never know...

Drive Snapshot - Download evaluation Software

Unbelievable little .exe file that will work on its own. Even has a 64bit version. Some things to learn to use it but WELL WORTH. I've never loss any data or system settings over several decades. It's saved me over a dozen times.

Easy, 1–2-minute, daily backups!

@Deputydaves

This update was intended for BSOD users but I just got thr recommendation on a win 11 only system.  It crashed my Dell 16 xps, how did I get out ... simply hard reset the PC by holding the start button for 15 seconds, because it got stuck in reboot. Then windows automatically rolled back to win 11 23H.

Nothing to do now, after the fact, but wait until Windows Update installs it for you. Just my opinion…
