m18 R2, 4090, 64GB, dock, issue with multiple displays

Alienware m18 R2

Alienware m18 R2

When the lid  is open and plugged in, the laptop screen is screen 1 and it is duplicated on the first attached monitor (2) and the display is extended on to the 2nd monitor (3). When I close the lid, the mouse pointer will not cross between the two monitors. When I open the it, it will cross again. I've played with the display setting but nothing seems to work. I have the monitors connected to the two HDMI ports on a Kensington Thunderbolt 4 dock. Any insights?

Hi,

The issue you're experiencing could be due to how the system interacts with the Kensington Thunderbolt 4 dock and its display configuration. Here are some steps you can try:

  1. Adjust Display Settings:

    • Go to Settings > System > Display and ensure the monitors are arranged correctly in the display layout.
    • Confirm that the screens are extended rather than duplicated unless intended.
  2. Update Drivers and Firmware:

    • Ensure your GPU drivers (NVIDIA RTX 4090) are up to date.
    • Check for firmware updates for the Kensington dock from their official website.
  3. Test Without Dock:

    • Try connecting the monitors directly to your laptop (if ports are available) to rule out any dock-related issues.
  4. Modify Lid Settings:

    • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does and set it to Do nothing when plugged in.

Note:
Dell support for 3rd party docking stations is limited, so for persistent issues with the dock, it may be helpful to reach out to Kensington's support team.
