m18 R1, power button flashing 4 blue 1 red

I have this issue which i assume lead to my laptop being dead right now. I often leave my laptop to run analysis on satelite data on a recursion. Two days ago i left it on a similar run and left for half an hour, when i got back i saw my laptop working perfectly fine but the power button was flashing blue 4 times and red 1 time. i checked the service manual and i saw it was something "short in hinge cable tripped ocp2(display)" i didnot understand what that was and since my laptop was working fine without any loss of performance i continued to work since my talk is basically tomorrow (the day after im writing this). But to my surprise the next day my laptop's screen and keyboard absolutely went blank on me. I had it connected to an external monitor, keyboard and mouse and i could see everything working there. but it wasnt taking any power, it was running solely on battery and after the battery was dead, my laptop is there dead staring at me with all my data inside it.

if anyone got similar issue, id like to know what happened and if anyone got it fixed.

It sounds like you may have to open the system up and check the cables. If you have an extended warranty then I would open a support ticket but if you don't then you can probably check it yourself.

There may not be any visual damage with the cable but it may still have to be replaced. You could also have a short on the motherboard but it's a little difficult to diagnose that without trying to replace the cable first. Or you can try this below.

Does your power supply have an indicator light showing that it's powered? Plug it into the wall first and then plug it into the laptop. If the indicator light goes off then that's a sure sign that there is a short in the system as it trips the PSU so no extra damage is done to the board.

You can try unplugging the hinge cable from the board and then try plugging in the PSU again. If the light stays on then there's a good chance that the cable or the display are the things causing the fault. If the light still goes off then that's a sign that it's probably the motherboard.

This will take a fair level of disassembly but you can find out how to do this in the Service manual

i tried plugging it into the wall and then plugging it into the laptop to see if the charger light goes off or not, it didnt go off. And im kinda afraid to take the laptop apart since idk if i have the required tools, i just have a basic laptop disassembly screwdriver set. but i do have a question, if the problem is in the hinge cable for display and io, why is it that the laptop isnt taking any power at least it can charge the battery right?

@ZephyrOfReverie was the blinking 1 Red then 4 Blue or was it 4 Red and 1 Blue? I know you mentioned in the first post that it was 4 blue and 1 red but the codes should start with red first and then blue so I thought I'd check with you first.

The 1/4 code is the short in hinge cable error but while a 4/1 code isn't listed in the diagnostic codes table, it usually means a battery or adapter failure.

If you have the 1/4 error then I can only think that it's not taking a charge because the board is detecting the short and it has shut down charging to protect itself.

@mattyb3 It was definitely 1 red and 4 blue, if you check the service manual for m18 u will find that the light code for hinge cable short is 1.4, so im guessing i had the order wrong it was 1 red and 4 blue
