m17 R5 AMD, random shut downs

Hi Guys,

I have an Alienware M17 R5 AMD with randow shutdowns. I got it without an SSD, bent bottom and rear IO shields and broken left fan (GPU). All of that is fixed. But it randomly shuts off every 2 minutes or so. I've installed windows 10 because 11 took to long and kept failing due to shut offs. Updates are all done now, I can't update the bios because it keeps shutting off halfway trough. I don't think it's overheating because the fans are often low en temps are low as well when it shuts off.

Do you guys have any idea?

Hi

CPU paste/pad is old or defective?

Perhaps try a BIOS update with no SSD connected, or a battery or anything to reduce the loading.

Even try a BIOS .rcv file?

Also not having an SSD fitted means it sidesteps the BitLocker problem.

If in doubt please ask.

Hi,

The BIOS has been updated and somehow I got it to work a bit better when I tried taking one RAM stick out. It worked for like 20 minutes instead of 2. I don't know why but then it went back to the same old 2 minutes per go again. I brought it to a tech shop to check it out and they don't know the problem either. Replaced cooling paste etc. Ran it with and without battery connected. No luck so far. Also it keeps resetting the SSD somehow (after 100 attempts of installing windows it works some time and after a few shutdowns no windows again).

Hi

Next is a LIVE session, using only the RAM, not the internal storage.

https://www.linuxmint.com/download.php

Download the above and use Rufus to make a bootable USB.

It runs live, so will feel a little bit lumpy, but you can use it to access the internet, create documents etc.  It is a complete OS, some would say better then Windows 10 or 11.

If in doubt please ask.
