m17 R5 AMD, Blue Screen when open/boot up the laptop

Hey guys,

Since october-november i started to encounter some blue screens, not very often by that time, i would say 1 blue screen at 2-3 weeks which i thought was due to some windows updates or from the cold as i was traveling a lot during that time. But recently after mid december / beginning of january, i started to have more and more, reaching today and yesterday to have around 6-7 times for my laptop to give me blue screen when i'm opening it.  Nowadays i try to open it and its just giving me blue screen after few seconds, before even to load the windows, and its restarting itself, and so on for 5-6 or 7 time until its loading the windows properly.

Maybe this information will help: my laptop has 2 video graphic cards, one AMD that come with the processor (are somehow connected/attached to each other), and the normal nvidia rtx 3060. At one point before all this to happened i noticed that due to an updated to my nvidia graphic card or windows update (were both in the same day so i don't know exactly which one was the problem), my AMD control center app, where i could see details about the processor and the graphic card and to make updates throw it, it stoped working and could't open anymore saying that an app/programe is somehow blocking or stopping it from opening. So maybe they are fighting with each other ?

Most common errors i received and i had time to take notes of them are:

KERNEL SECURITY CHECK FAILURE (noticed it today 2 times )

SYSTEM THREAD EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED (not very often, like 4-5 time in total)

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (the most common, this is daily )

There may be other errors that i had in blue screen, but i just didn't got the chance to properly read them and take a note of them.

If someone knows how to fix this once and for all, i would really appreciate it.

Thank you so much !

Download a copy of Who Crashed (Resplendence Software;  the free version is fine), which you can use to parse the dump logs to determine what's causing the issue.

@ejn63

Thank you for your advice.

This are the errors that Who Crashed found:

1.

C:\Windows\Minidump\070124-16468-01.dmp (Minidump)
This is likely a software problem which means that it was probably caused by a bug in a driver.
There is a possibility that this is caused by memory corruption. Memory corruption can be caused by a faulty driver, faulty RAM, overheating and more. Read this article on memory corruption. Read this article on thermal issues

2.

C:\Windows\Minidump\062924-16437-01.dmp (Minidump)
This indicates that the video memory manager has encountered a condition that it is unable to recover from.
This is a video related crash.

3.

C:\Windows\Minidump\062924-15359-01.dmp (Minidump)
This indicates that the video memory manager has encountered a condition that it is unable to recover from.
This is a video related crash. A DirectX driver was identified on the stack. Since there is no other responsible driver detected, it is suggested that you look for an updated driver for your graphics hardware. It's also possible that your graphics hardware was non-functional or overheated.

4.

C:\Windows\Minidump\062724-17671-01.dmp (Minidump)
This indicates that the video memory manager has encountered a condition that it is unable to recover from.
This is a video related crash.

5.

C:\Windows\Minidump\062424-15531-01.dmp (Minidump)
This bug check indicates that the driver is in an inconsistent or invalid power state.
A device object has been blocking an IRP for too long a time. This is likely caused by a hardware problem, but there is a possibility that this is caused by a misbehaving driver.
This bugcheck indicates that a timeout has occurred. This may be caused by a hardware failure such as a thermal issue or a bug in a driver for a hardware device.
Read this article on thermal issues
A full memory dump will likely provide more useful information on the cause of this particular bugcheck.

What would you suggest me to do to sort this problem ? Can and should I delete the ''Minidump'' folder or maybe try to reset the windows from 0 ? I'm not very experienced in this kind of things, but some descriptions had something regarding a driver, but last time i checked all of them were up to date so idk what is the problem...

thank you

Which of the suggestions have you followed?

0.  Completely clean inside the system, and replace the thermal pads with new ones or a layer of non-conductive thermal paste.

1.  Run a complete Dell diagnostic on the system.  F12 a  few times to access.

If those don't reduce or eliminate the crashes, there are two approaches you can take.

2.  Reload a clean copy of Windows and install all the required drivers (from Dell -- not AMD!).

or

3.  At minimum, uninstall the video drivers completely and reboot the system.  Then reload the video drivers (again, from Dell/Alienware, not from AMD).

@ejn63 Thank you for coming back to me, sorry for late replay. Before to get the chance to read your advice, i tried to check for some updates on my graphic cards. My nvidia was okey, but the amd had a driver update that wasn't installed (found it on the amd website). And since then, the only blue screen i get is:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

The rest of them disappeared, but i still get 5-6 blue screens everytime i open the laptop with IRQL.

Only today i noticed a new one:

UNEXPECTED_STORE_EXCEPTION

After i run the complete Dell diagnostic, i still get the blue screen and the diagnostic results didn't showed any errors (the  full diagnostic that took  1h or more ), so i think maybe is not the laptop or its components, but a driver (idk which one as the graphics ones are both up to date) or the windows system, but i don't know how to identify the exact problem and how to sort it out.

I can try to reload a clean copy of windows from Alienware AssistantOS Recovery, but i really don't know how much this will help as last time i did this was everything fine the first day and then again blue screen....

Can you explain me what do you actually mean by saying to install the drivers from dell not amd ? from dell from where ?

Thank you

@GladunA  Hey mate, I did yes. After many IT and repairs experts I went asking for help, I found out by one guy that actually it's a damage in the motherboard occurred my running the laptop on high temperature for too long without a cooler for it (those things you put the laptop on it). So when running on high temps one pin ("leg") from a chip or part of the motherboard got melted or detached from its place and that's why when booting up the laptop, I get blue screen. Because the circuit that the laptop runs on the motherboard, at one point in his process of opening windows, he encounters this pin that got damaged and the laptop identifies the problem but can't tell exactly what it is as it's not software problem, it's a hardware problem. The repair from what I understand is very high as you have just 2 options:

1. Change the motherboard which is the most expensive part

2. Try to find someone that does this things of sticking or gluing chips and parts for computers and laptops, and see if they can identify the problem and fix it. Or you can sent it to service is it's still in warranty, which unfortunately was not my case.

hope this helps mate. This is just my experience, I'm not 100% sure you have the same problem, but it's worthy for you to get a check on your laptop's motherboard.

@CodrutRotaru Hello, can you specifically determine what exactly is broken on the motherboard?

@for_dell_support no. it can be identify only by experts or engineers from dell that know the mother board and can run a check on each part of it. I don't think is something easy to do, since the  laptop can't tell which one is the problem, so you have to take the motherboard and try every single part. I wish Dell will offer this suport, specially after being many people complaining about this. It's not normal for a laptop to get this kind of fault/issue after just 6-8 months, even more for a laptop and brand that are very know well and they advertise that are very good at cooling off the temperature ...

If anyone is facing this issue, particularly Alienware M17 R5 AMD users; the only solution I found is to run the laptop using the external graphics card (i.e., the Nvidia GPU) and disable the hybrid graphics option from BIOS.

I encountered this problem after Windows automatically updated my laptop’s BIOS without my permission. I tried everything: reinstalling drivers, performing a hard reset, and swapping all possible components. Unfortunately, none of it worked. I had to accept the situation with a heavy heart and have now decided not to purchase Alienware products again, at least not until proper local support is available.

This is my second Alienware laptop with a major issue. I honestly didn’t expect such poor quality from such a reputable brand.
