m15 R7, WD22TB4 issue, warranty still active but Support Request denied

Hi everyone,

I’ve been using a WD22TB4 docking station for over two years with my Alienware m15 R7, and it has worked perfectly up until now. However, as of yesterday, the docking station suddenly stopped functioning.

Here’s what happened:

  • When I connect it to power, the dock blinks three times, the internal fan runs briefly, then it shuts down completely with no lights, no sign of power.

  • Normally, even when my laptop isn’t connected, the docking station provides power to my mouse and keyboard, which light up — but now, there's no response.

  • The USB-C end of the Thunderbolt cable also no longer lights up.

  • I’ve tried unplugging everything and waiting for five minutes. I also held down the power button for 30 seconds after reconnecting everything, but the same issue persists — three blinks, then nothing.

The docking station is still under warranty, so I contacted Dell support. However, they claimed it’s a compatibility issue with my Alienware laptop and denied the service request. This is surprising since the dock has worked seamlessly with this same system for over two years.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue with the WD22TB4? If so, I’d greatly appreciate any guidance on how you resolved it. Also, can anyone confirm whether Dell's denial based on “compatibility” is valid in a case like this, despite long-term successful use?

Thank you in advance for your help!

The three flashes means the docking station has power and is ready to connect to a system.  If you have not tried a new cable between the dock and notebook, that's the first thing to do.

It is true that Dell does not support docking stations on any Alienware models.  That said, have there been any recent updates (particularly firmware) to the notebook?

Thank you for your help and I really appreciate it. It’s good to have that information. I brought the docking station to my workplace and tested it with an older computer that's on the compatibility list, and it worked without any issues. Based on that, I think your suggestion is correct: my laptop probably received a firmware update that is no longer compatible with the docking station. I'll find a way to work around that. Thank you very much.

@SeakingJ Late to this, but double check and see if there's a firmware update for the WD22TB4. We see a lot of devices (e.g. M4 MacBooks) that are on paper compatible with the dock not work until the firmware is updated. That may fix it up if you haven't tried it already.
