m15 R7, Samsung 980 Pro with heatsink
Hi,
I purchased an Alienware m15 R7 AMD Ryzen 6800H 64GB RAM. It's in transit, it hasn't arrived yet.
I want to install a Samsung 980 Pro 2TB on the second NVMe PCIe slot.
First question would be if this laptop supports SSD PCIe 4.0? I suppose that it does since Ryzen 6000 series supports PCIe 4.0.
Second question, if it does, the Samsung 980 Pro has two versions, one with heatsink and one without heatsink. The one with heatsink runs cooler, but it's also thicker, would that fit on the laptop? Which one would be recommended to install on the m15 R7? Or else what other NVMe PCIe 4.0 would be recommended for this laptop? I was also considering the Western Digital SN850.
Thanks very much. Kind regards, Carlos

Welcome to the Dell Community forum @Codemeister_ie and @Meephan

Yes, a heatshield should be used.

I also have the same question. Have you installed the 980 pro? Does it work well?

Hello,
I installed a samsung 980pro 1TB on a m15r7 with the original dell heatsink. It does not work Until i did not use the gpu, it work fine. But when i use the gpu i mean the temperature is too hot and finally the ssd disapear atfer 5-6 minutes of play. I need to reboot to recover it. I try to change the thermal pad without any success. From a point of view of samsung magician software there is no problem. Finally i try to swap the orginal ssd and my new 980pro and it seem's to work but i need more time to be sure that it work fine.
Best regards.

Dude, I've installed two Samsung 980 PRO on my M15R7. The default heatsink for these Nvmes it's a bad idea.
My temps for drive0 (1TB Windows drive) are about 35 degrees. For drive1 (2TB for Documents, games etc.) about 39 degrees (On Idle).
I'm using these heatsinks and 1mm thermal pads Gelid Gp-Extreme.
My results on Magician performance tests:

Hi. Recently purchased the m15r7 I too want to add an additional m.2 ssd and am wondering about the heatshield on the Samsung, etc headroom. I am seeing the copper shield Dell uses in the pictures posted above. However, one person in the forum - on another post - wrote about Dell either not knowing what the part is... or not knowing what they were even talking about. So, for clarification and to the point - according to LuisAlvez the 1mm thermal pads Gelid Gp-Extreme works...or a heat shield that is no thicker than 1mm will work. I have used the Samsung 980 and the Seagate Firecuda. I am wondering if the newest Samsung 990 is worth the extra wait and cash. The numbers look pretty fast!
Merry Christmas to the Dell Community!

Can you be more specific? The default heatsink as in the heatshield that came with the laptop? Or the heatshink from Samsung?
Also, where do you purchase the heat sink you shared in the photo? Did you apply the thermal pad on both sides of the m.2 drive?

@lostmemory so did you go with the 990 in the end? did the heatsink fit? I'm considering this now because I've installed a WD SSD and it keeps disappearing + blue screening after an intense gaming load for 5-10 mins.

Hey brother. I'm now using a Samsung 990 PRO with the heatsink you saw in my previous post. I'm not using Dell's original copper heatsink.
These are my current results on CrystalDiskMark.
