m15 R6, overheating
Alienware m15 R6
Hi,
I’ve owned an Alienware m15 R6 (i9-11900h, 32gb, RTX 3070) since March 27th 2022. Since day dot I’ve been having issues with the machine getting hot. I sent some logs to Dell and they confirmed that they’d send an engineer out to my house to replace the Heat Sink (for a £25 call out fee) they replaced it, exactly the same issue, the machine continues to thermal throttle and runs at a constant 100c but mostly 102-105c almost immediately whilst gaming.
I also had an issue with the keyboard so Dell sent another Engineer out to remedy this.
I phoned back Dell and was told by a manager that Intel Chips can run at 110c-120c and that what I am experiencing is normal and that they won’t issue me with a refund or an exchange due to this.
Dell have asked for further HWINFO64 logs which I’ve sent and that shows that it ran at 100c constantly and reaching 102c consistently.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I just feel like Dell aren’t going to help even know the machine is clearly thermal throttling and running hot.

If this issue is still up, I have/had the same problem.
my unit is i7-11800H 3070, upgraded ram to 32gb G.skill f4 3200 grs 18CL and installed a 2TB 980 samsung pro SSD gen4.
heat sink/fans are working, no dust/debris clogging the intake/exhaust and not close to the wall either.
I did a couple of research and found that since the m15 r6 was stripped of the OC controls in AWCC, they are preset to have OC on all the time (turbo boost) in BIOS. My laptop on idle (before) was around 55-65c and when I play light games at max settings like CSGO or LOL on performance mode, temps still reach 95-100c.
My solution (that worked for me that doesn’t require undervolting
1. Set TCC to 10 in BIOS so CPU temps will only reach that threshold.
2. set processor speed to 99 at max speed and 5 at min speed. This in turn will stop your CPU from constantly OCing while being idle and also remedy high temps during load. I set my max to 90 tho. I still get around 4.4-4.5MHz while gaming and 2.2-2.5MHz on idle.
Now, my laptop temps on idle are around 44-45c and browsing around 50c. Playing most games at max settings are around 85-90c with little FPS lost (around 3-5) so not that big. I still get 240 FPS at max settings on LOL so I’m happy with that.
I also set these settings:
GPU>optimus on, Graphics set to performance
Battery: Performance Mode
In AWCC, I will need to do more research on how to get the best fan controls and offset.

I also have a M15 r6, and use a
Cooler Master Notepal X-Slim - Notebook fan - 17" - 160 mm - black | Dell USA
and a 4" tiltable fan (blowing air under front left side) in combination to keep the laptop cool.
Mine wasn't throttling, but the M2 slot 2 drive was getting hot, above 80 C.

Dell called me, they’ve reviewed the log and have stated they will send an engineer to my house free of charge to replace the; heat sink, motherboard and fans.
fingers crossed that it works

@GMPurEvil I just had to reply to say thank you! I've been dealing with thermal throttling for months now and my favorite games had constant micro-stuttering ever 10 -15 seconds and it was driving me crazy. The CPU temp was constantly pegged at 99. After I made the changes you suggested, I can now run my favorite games at full at it stays below 92 degrees Celsius, even with my external 4K ultra-wide monitor. Again, Thank You!!!
Apologies for resurrecting an old thread. But, sorry not sorry. :)
