m15, non-Dell battery not working

I decided to clean my old Alienware laptop, but when I opened it, I noticed that the battery was swollen. I thought this could be a fire hazard. So, I bought a new battery. However, it simply refuses to be recognized. It worked until it drained to 0%, but the laptop won't charge it, and in the BIOS, it constantly shows "Non-Dell battery." I have tried all the BIOS versions available on the website:

- 2.09.xx

- 2.12.xx

- 2.18.xx

- 2.21.01

I also tried removing the CMOS battery and holding the power button, but nothing helps — it just won’t detect this new battery. Why does Dell make such dangerous batteries, and why do they programmatically prevent replacing them with a new one? Is there any way to fix this?

There are a couple of possibilities - first, is it a new, OEM battery or third party -- or has it been "rebuilt"?

If it has a warranty, have the seller replace it.

If the replacement does the same thing, it's very possible there was damage to the mainboard due to the swelling.

All lithium batteries built without a steel shell -- the vast majority of notebooks have been built with these for years -- can swell at end of life.

To find the correct Dell OEM battery part numbers, you need to tell us which m15? There are seven models.

@DELL-Chris M This is M15 R1 2018. I have already contacted the seller and sent him this battery, he said he will send me another one. When I receive the new battery, I will write updates. I hope the other battery will work correctly.

@DELL-Chris M So I have the original one which was swollen, 1F22N. How does this work, why when I get a replacement battery, it already has a different number?

That would be a question for your seller.  Are these indeed supposed to be OEM batteries (cost around $150) or were they much cheaper than that (in which case they're probably rebuilt or third party and relabeled)?

* Perhaps because it was not purchased directly from Dell?

@DELL-Chris M

I bought a laptop. I used it for 7 years. It has battery 1F22N. It worked. And now it is recognized correctly. It just swollen and I want to replace it. My question is why the battery that was installed all these years with the number 1F22N, but you give me a list of batteries that do not have this number? In other words, 1F22N is the battery that came with the laptop, but when replacing to a new one, this number is no longer suitable?
I showed photos of the swollen original battery and probably a counterfeit one that was purchased.

When I look up 1F22N in the internal part tool, it shows as "no data found". Not sure what to tell you?

@DELL-Chris M This topic can be closed. Today, I received a battery with the same number (1F22N ) I ordered, but this time it was recognized without any problems just by plugging it in, everything was as it should be, both charging and in the BIOS.

So the problem was with a counterfeit battery or maybe a factory defect. Here is a photo of how the new battery looks and a photo of the BIOS where everything is recognized correctly.

Thank you for your help!

That battery may not provide the service life the original one did -- it was made in 2019, so it's already 5-6 years old.

ejn63 is correct. That battery is 5 years, 242 days old.

I also see the confusion. 1F22N is the battery "type". But that is not the Dell part number (DP/N). The 20 digit serial number shows a Dell part number 71JF4 =

CN-071JF4-71766-9BA-9J62

Dell battery 71JF4 was only tested/validated by Dell for the following Inspiron laptops =
5576/5577/7557/7559/7566/7567

What was the 20 digit serial number on the original battery? You do not show it in the original pictures.

@DELL-Chris M

Here is a photo of the original swollen, fire-hazard battery. Honestly, I don't care what might be messed up in your databases or where the error could be.

Couldn't they have installed the wrong batteries at the factory?

The main thing is that everything was recognized correctly, and the model was exactly the same as the one that fit my laptop.

The swollen battery part number is HYWXJ, which is on the list Dell-ChrisM provided, so it is an OEM battery.  It too was built in 2019, so it's about the same age as the battery you've just purchased.

HYWXJ 4 Cell, Lithium Ion, 60WHR, BYD
