Area-51m R2, never goes to sleep?

Hi,

I have my Alienware Area-51m R2 on the latest update of Windows 10. No matter what I do with the power settings, the computer will never go to sleep. I can invoke a small executable named Sleep_Suspend and the computer goes to sleep.

I've tried messing with most of the advanced setting in the "Power Options" arena with no success and trying the power management settings in the keyboard and mouse areas of the "Device Manger" don't help either. Any idea where I can look to resolve this?

Update and problem has been resolved:  I originally had the external Dell monitor connected to the R2 via the DVI port.  I moved the monitor over to the HDMI port and the problem has been resolved.  The computer now "sleeps like a baby"!

To resolve the issue with your Alienware Area-51m R2 not going to sleep, try the following steps:

  • Update all drivers: Make sure your computer's drivers are up-to-date, including the graphics card driver, motherboard driver, and any other relevant drivers.
  • Change Power Plan: Go to Control Panel > Power Options and change the active power plan to one of the built-in power plans like “Balanced” or “Power Saver”.
  • Disable Wake Timers: Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change Plan Settings > Change Advanced Power Settings and locate the “Sleep” option. Disable all wake timers.
  • Disable Hybrid Sleep: If you have enabled Hybrid Sleep, disable it. Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change Plan Settings > Change Advanced Power Settings and locate the “Sleep” option. Change the setting for “Allow Hybrid Sleep” to “Off”.
  • Disable Devices that can Wake the Computer: Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change Plan Settings > Change Advanced Power Settings > Device Settings > Devices and uncheck “Allow this device to wake the computer” for all devices.
  • Disable Hibernation: If you have enabled Hibernation, disable it. Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change Plan Settings > Change Advanced Power Settings > Sleep and set “Allow Hibernation” to “Off”.
  • Run the Power Troubleshooter: Go to Control Panel > Troubleshooting > View All > Power and run the troubleshooter.
  • Reinstall the operating system: If none of the above steps resolve the issue, consider reinstalling the operating system.

Note: The steps may slightly vary depending on the version of Windows 10 you are using.

Thanks for the information.  Nothing up to the point of reinstalling the OS seems to work and I may try that at some point.

Microsoft says I can upgrade to Windows 11 without issue and I may consider doing that at some point as well.

Just to give you a bit of background, I am using the A51m R2 as a desktop and keep the lid closed at all times.  If I could figure a way to power the laptop on without having to raise the lid and press that power button that would be an option as well.  I tried one of the Dell port replicators that has a power button on it but, of course, the Alienware does not respond to the power button on the port replicator as one of my other Dell laptops does.

Do you know of any way to power the Alienware on remotely?
