17 R5, 5.0GHz Turbo usage?

Hi Guys,

I have an Alienware 17 R5 with 2.9GHz and 5.0GHz Turbo. I am assuming that if I run 5.0GHz, the laptop is built to handle this without harming the processor? Does anyone have advice on this issue?

Thanks,

Chris

The 5.0 GHz is the upper limit for the CPU, and it will only be reached if the system demands it, AND only on one core -- if you're running on all cores, you will never see 5.0 GHz.

Thank you for this information. So I guess if I am running a video recording software, such as Camtasia, and running the program I am recording, I will never see 5.0 GHZ?

I'm not familiar with that software, but the only way you'll see 5 GHz is to disable all but one CPU core -- and I suspect the faster clock speed of a single CPU will not make up for running the software on multiple CPUs simultaneously.

The turbo speed is basically advertising copy for Intel, just as battery runtimes are for system manufacturers.  You have to tune for very specific circumstance to see the maximum of either.

Will Turbo switch over to the most demanding program? I have two programs running the same CPU %, how will Turbo handle this?

Thanks,

Chris
