17 R2, random freezing with CPU and GPU fans at full speed
this happens 2 or 3 times per hour, sometimes at idle and others when im playing.
I have an Alienware 17 R2 , after using it for some time, it suddenly freezes for 2 to 3 seconds and the CPU Fan start rotating at full speed and then everything returns to normal.
When frozen, the mouse does not respond, keyboard does not react, audio crashes also, etc.
This process happens for just a few seconds, and always starts with the CPU FAN start rotating at full speed then stoping and then the same thing with the GPU FAN . As i said before even if laptop is idle and nothing is being done, this happens.
Is there something wrong with my CPU Fan or is this some kind of programmed test running in the background that I am not aware off.

Use search.
You have two options for solving the problem before you lose your discrete GPU:
1) Uninstall SupportAssist from your laptop. After uninstall, reboot.
2) Disable some services related to SupportAssist. Reboot.

For everyone whos having this problem too, i have partially solved it.
I found that when this happens in Task Manager the program Dell Tech Hub it uses 100% of the cpu and stops when the fans have stopped.
So i try this solution and it worked for me. Go to the windows service "Dell TechHub".
Don't kill the process from taskmanager [Processes] tab.
If you have task manager open, switch to its [Services] tab.
Look for Name: DellTechHub right-click on it and select stop.
It will stop spawning them until next reboot.
if you want a longer lasting fix, until we figure this out. . . From the taskmager [Services] tab look at the very bottom of the window, you should see " Fewer details | Open Services" click "Open Services". Again, find "Dell TechHub". Right-click it and select properties.
In the new window, change Startup type: from: Automatic (Delayed Start) -> to Manual. Then click the Apply button.
This will prevent the service from restarting on next reboot but doesn't add/update/remove/change anything else.
Its not a proper fix, but will work until we figure out what the real issue is or Dell releases and update

THANK YOU ! I was having this issue since a couple of months, partially fixed by just disabling the process, but UNINSTALLING the Support Assist seem to solve it definitely.
Not a thumb up for the Alienware/Dell devs teams who release a support assist tool that literrally IS the cause of all of our trouble !

this exact thing is happening to me with my system. I am sooo happy to have paid thousands for a system that sounds terrible, stutters during gameplay after 20 minutes of playing and now freezes. great job, dell. I uninstalled support assist almost immediately after getting this system.

i have found that after uninstalling Alienware Support Assistant in has stopped. i believe in must be running a hardware test causing the fans to go off and the screen freezes. it been a few weeks now and there is no sign of it running the tests.

I have not uninstalled or disable this yet but I literally have that on my Alienware and I can see it's pretty much the only thing I have on my computer so I'm sure as others have said this fixes the issue thank you for the information as a IT tech of 25 years I'm pretty sure what's happening is the machine is scanning the computer checking on the hardware and when it checks a certain part of the CPU or other part of the computer that handles it it probably causes lag because it locks up the processor
