17 R1, GPU upgrades in 2025
I have a 17 R1 I was given in perfect working order from a friend, so I'm upgrading it. I've purchased a 4910 CPU (highest I can go since I don't overclock?) and the 4 and five pipe heat sinks for the new CPU and eventual new GPU, respectively.
My understanding from threads here and Reddit is that I can go up to the GTX1070m for sure using modded drivers, unlocked BIOS, the above cooling upgrade, and eventual 330w adapter (just the adapter right, no internal upgrades?)
In the years since the last thread like this I've found, has it come to light that anything newer than a 1070 will fit? Or it that the last GPU compatible with the slot?

There are definitely better options these days like the Quadro RTX 3000 and some guys have also been experimenting with the GeForce RTX 3080 but I'm not sure if this card has specifically been tested in the 17 R1.
You'd be best to head over to NotebookTalk.net and check out the Alienware section of the forum. There are still a couple of guys still tinkering with the older laptops.
