17 R1, GPU fan issues
G'day All,
My Alienware 17 R1 has developed a problem with the GPU fan control which is affecting the CPU fan. So, what is happening is, after it starts up both fans activate asper normal but after a short period the GPU fan shuts off, this then triggers the CPU fan to run flat out, however the GPU fan does not restart and the GPU temp goes sky high (90 deg. C+).
Does anyone have any insight for this problem and a solution for solving it?
TIA for your help.
Mark

You have two options for solving the problem before you lose your discrete GPU:
1) Uninstall SupportAssist from your laptop. After uninstall, reboot.
2) Disable some services related to SupportAssist. Reboot.

Hi @m_fry welcome to this free user to user Alienware laptop discussion forum.
From your description the thermistor (temperature sensor) part in the GPU fan has failed. The fix is to install new GPU fan DP/N FKDN8. See Removing and Replacing the Video-card Fan within Alienware 17 Owner's Manual (dell.com). There are YouTube videos: example Dell Alienware 17 R2 (P43F001) CPU Fan How-To Video Tutorial - YouTube.

Thanks for the help crimson, I will buy a new one and replace the old fan and see if it fixes the problem.
