17 R1, 2014, maximum display, 1440p possible?
Hi all. I recently got my hands on an M17x (2014) Alienware laptop. I have upgraded almost everything possible. It was originally running an Intel i7 4910MQ and an R9 M290X. It is now running a 4940MX and a 4070 (long story). I was just wondering, what is the maximum display resolution and refresh rate possible? @mattyb3 I Have seen alot of your answers in these forums and it seems like you know alot. Is it possible to get a 1440p and/or high refresh rate display on this laptop?

Internally, no -- this system never shipped with more than FHD+ resolution. Externally the answer should be yes.

Sure it was M17x? The M17x series were 2009 to 2012. Perhaps you have the 17 R1 released in 2013?

@ejn63 Okay then. Are there any compatible diplays from newer generations?

Not for that system, no -- if you want that resolution, it's only going to be available on an external display.

@DELL-Chris M For some reason Dell decided to put M17x on the service sticker on the bottom of the 17's. I'm guessing that they had a last minute naming change and didn't bother changing the stickers. It has causing some confusion over the years.

No, I have never seen anyone manage to install a higher resolution screen on these laptops. I'm not saying it's impossible but there wouldn't be a plug and play option. It would probably take a special display cable that would have to be rewired for the eDP connector on the board. 1080p display cables usually aren't compatible with higher resolution displays, from what I've seen in the past.
The best you can get off the shelf is the 120Hz 1080p display which you can probably overclock slightly higher than 120hz.
Very interesting that you got a 4070 working in there. Any special modifications required for that upgrade or did you find a standard format MXM card?

@mattyb3 I did indeed find a standard MXM 4070. Came from overseas from a brand called X-Vsion. Was 99% sure it was scam but decided to try my luck anyways. Surprisingly, it was real. I've made it a project of mine to make absolute maximum upgrades to this laptop since then. Anyways, I have a follow up question. What version is the mini displayport on the laptop?

@mattyb3 Elaborating on the 4070, even though the card was legitimate, it was hard trying to get that thing to run. Had to power limit it through drivers (which were also difficult to get) and it still heats up really badly. I'm still trying to somehow get a more robust cooling system in the laptop, but I have hap little success in the regard. Once I finally got it running, it was bottlenecked like nothing I've ever seen (obviously), but performance really wasn't the goal. I adore the concept of MXM and replaceable parts in PC's, so this was really more about how far I could take it. Plus, I found the laptop in a recycling shop for about 50 bucks, so putting some more money into it wasnt a big deal as it wasnt initally expensive. Considering making a video on it as there are still some ridiculous (and incredibly janky) upgrades I want to try.

@CERTIFIEDema Great job! I am in a Whatsapp group with a bunch of guys from around the world that are still trying to do mods to the older AW and Clevo laptops. Send me a DM if you were interested in joining. You can also hit up the NotebookTalk.net forum a few of them are in there too.
