15 R3, typing 4 on its own 4, P, F, Home do not work
About a week ago while downloading footage from my GoPro to my Alienware 15 R3 the computer started doing odd things like windows opening on their own and some pop-out video player for YouTube kept coming up and video repeatedly starting and stopping. On restart the password box immediately filled on its own. Once I finally got in I opened Word and discovered 4, p, and f did not work but if I let it sit a few minutes it would just start typing pages full of 4s on its own. I checked the keyboard keys and did not see anything stuck in them to cause issues. I also removed the bottom of the computer and made sure the ribbon cable for the keyboard was fully inserted and secure.
I did some googling and found a post on this page (locked so can’t replay to it) that mentioned the same keys not working as well as the home key. Checked and my home key was also not working. That post mentioned Tobii being the problem, I disabled Tobii, no change. I then updated Tobii, no change. Deleted and reinstalled a new version of Tobii, but still no change. Uninstalled Tobii then deleted every folder on the computer that had anything to do with Tobii, you guessed it, no change.
I tried updating the keyboard drivers but it said there were none that were newer. I uninstalled the keyboard through device manager and rebooted, no change. I also did every Windows update available and attempted to update every driver that had anything to do with the keyboard and touchpad. Also updated the bios through the Dell support website. After all that I ordered a replacement keyboard for the laptop. The ribbon cable can be plugged in without fully installing the keyboard so I plugged it in and turned on the computer, again no change password box was filled, and the same keys did not type.
A couple of years ago I upgraded the hard drives that came with the computer and had just cloned the old ones to the larger drives. I still had the original unmodified hard drives so I popped those in since I knew the issue did not exist when they were last used. I had also upgraded my ram a few months ago so I put the old ram back in as well. Still filled the password box on startup and the same keys didn’t work. There was no keyboard issue with the computer back when I replaced the drives so the fact the computer still has the same problem with the old hard drives leads me to believe it’s a hardware issue somewhere other than the keyboard itself.
If I use the on screen keyboard I can type the broken keys, they also work when using a remote connection.
At this point I am running out of things to try, the only thing left I can think of would be the motherboard unless there is some other component in the computer that has failed causing the issue.
It may also be worth mentioning I replaced the motherboard on this laptop back in May. I thought I was purchasing a new motherboard but it turned out to be a used board that already had a service tag assigned to it (Originally shipped to Costa Rica). I didn’t find out it was a used motherboard until I had put the whole laptop back together. At the time I was about to go on a trip in 2 weeks that I needed to take the computer with me and didn’t want to take the whole computer apart and wait for another replacement. Of course, the warranty on it was only 90 days.
