Pre-Dell Area 51 X58 ALX 2009 Help identify my power supply!

Hi All!

I purchased this beast back in 2008_2009ish...I'm refreshing it a bit and can't figure out what power supply it has in it. There are ZERO labels on it as you can see from the pic:

No labels on the bottom-back-or side. Do I really have to remove the entire power supply just to find out how many watts it has?

No idea what specs it had originally when I bought it 16 years ago. Here's my tag from the back. (any way to tell the specs from the Account # on the tag?)

Dropped in a 2080 Ti and it seems to handle it fine. Had some fun cleaning up the case and getting the lighting going again. (lost the 2 side alien head lights when I upgraded to a Sabertooth z87 board a decade or so ago but got them working again)

Looking pretty good!

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

there are 4 pins that has HDD LED and PL+/- and Gnd.  Then there is this two pin J9 header.  I have not tested this for a long time so not good with their function.  Pictures are high res to help read the pins.  iirc the 2 pin J9 is for the original Alienware motherboard.  this may explain it is not needed when motherboard is upgraded.

The system uses the same power supply as the contemporary XPS 730 -- you can still buy these

One source

The XPS version is much less expensive

Thanks for the reply. I'm not looking to buy a power supply. I just want to know how many watts my current one has. With no visible labels I guess I have to just take it out.<ugh>

The only old Alienware power supply that I can find with an all black shroud like mine is a 750w?

Here's a link to one for sale:

Not definitive for sure. It stinks that the only way to tell how many watts I have is to completely remove the thing.

Not sure why my previous reply isn't showing up.

I should have clarified. I'm not looking to buy a new power supply, just looking to identify how many watts my current one has. It stinks that it has no visible labels and the only way to identify how many watts it has is to completely remove the thing!

@ejn63  Not looking to buy a new one...just want to identify how many watts I have. Do I really need to completely remove it to see?

(this is now my 3rd reply...previous 2 did not show up. Apologies if they do show all the sudden)

Thanks!

The link in the reply held all up. All links have to be approved before going live. That is a pre-Dell Alienware desktop. If it was a post-Dell Alienware desktop, we could simply look up the Dell OEM power supply part number to see the wattage.

@DELL-Chris M Understood...thanks! Feel free to delete the two follow up replies and just keep my first one to tidy things up.

(I don't see a way to delete them myself)

Sorry!

OP please share pic of internal daughter board (LED board).  Is it a passive or active board?

Alienware® AlienFX® System Lighting [+$100 or $3/mo.]

on a time machine it seems Predator 2 psu was offered with three options:

the highest 1200w psu was offered for ALX.  Your pc does not have black painted case interior it is likely not ALX and does not have the highest power psu.

"To power these video cards you have a choice of either a 700W or a 1000W power supply. The one we have in our review sample is a 1000W model which may be a bit overkill, but it will ensure the best flexibility if you ever upgrade to faster and more powerful CPUs or video cards."

@redxps630 Thanks for the replies!

I'm really glad you asked about the daughter card...I've been looking up info on it for the last 4 days. When I upgraded in about 2013, I put in a Sabertooth Z87 board and lost the lights on the side panels. I was rushing to get the rig up and running so I left it and never fixed it. The front lights still worked though. Pretty much stopped using the computer over the last 8 years or so. Fast forward to now and I'm thinking about upgrading and using this case cause I like it.

Here's the card: (passive variety from 2006)

Here's where I have the 3 leads plugged into on the mobo to get the side lights working again: (bad pic)

My concern is if I upgrade the power supply I will lose the lighting. I was worried about the 2 pin connector...it comes right from the ATX bundle that plugs into the motherboard. (non-standard). After I read your post...I unplugged the 2 pin connector from the daughter card and fired up the rig and all lights were still working. Huh? I thought this was going to be the problem. Is it for the fan that's on the panel?

Back to the original topic...curiosity got to me and I pulled it:

I was bummed...lol. Was hoping for a 1000w or 1200w. Any info you can give on what pitfalls I might run into upgrading the power supply and trying to keep the lighting is much appreciated!

It's old but here's what I'm running now:

Asus Z87 Sabertooth motherboard
Windows 10 Pro 64 bit
Intel I5 4670K @ 4.4 ghz
16 gig 1866mhz Corsair Vengence Pro memory
Nvidia 2080 Ti 11gb Video Card (just got this used from a friend)
Intel 510 series 120gb SSD (boot drive)
Samsung 840 1TB SSD +Samsung 2TB SSD
Onboard Realtek sound

since it is 750W psu it likely uses a standard power cord.

a standard ATX psu is fine as long as it has 4 pin molex to power the dgt card.

BTW: I don't remember saying "Pre-Dell" when I created the topic...I know this rig is after the 2006 Dell merge. Also...I was mistaken to call this "ALX"...I thought that just meant it had Alien FX lighting. (which it does?)

I edited your topic (Dell gave me super user account) so other users can easily identify your pc model and contribute or use as reference.

the first responder confused your pc for the Dell XPS 730X which is also X58.

I do not think yours has AlienFx lighting which requires an active dgt card and cost an extra 100 USD at time of purchase.  nowadays it is virtually impossible to find a dgt card on sale on eBay.  maybe one day someone will put on a case for sale that has an active card.

AI: The minimum recommended power supply (PSU) for an RTX 2080 Ti is 650W. However, a 750W or even 850W PSU is often recommended
