Do i have to buy in Pairs? Currently i have one 8GB card and would like to add a single 32GB card to give me a total of 40GB will that work?

No, has to be certain configurations. Without knowing what system this is for it's hard to provide more details.

that would be 8+32 single channel, it is better to buy 2x16 matched pair to make it dual channel 32 GB and sell the 8GB if you do not need it, or keep it for other purpose. dual channel memory has better bandwidth than single channel. not to promise 8+32 would work either since that is not a Dell validated matrix.
if you have 4 DIMM then 2x16 + 2x4 will make it total 40 dual channel. if you have only 2 DIMM in the latest AW, then either 32 or 64 dual.
