Aurora R16, system Bios update time?

I am curious how long the system Bios update should take? This is the 2nd time I have tried to install it and currently it is on 28+ minutes and still not installed. I need to use my computer and can't wait only so long.

Hi everyone,

The steps below shall help mitigate the issue. As soon as new BIOS updates are available, they will be added to Dell.com/support

Current workaround
:

  1. Workaround:

    • Uninstall the January Windows KB update that corresponds to your system.: KB5050009, KB5050021, or KB5050009 update:

      1. Open Settings
      2. Select Windows Update
      3. Pause the Windows update
      4. Select Update history
      5. Select Uninstall updates
      6. Find the impacted update according to the operating system version used, labeled KB5050009, KB5050021, and KB5049981
      7. Select Uninstall
      8. Restart your computer
      9. Install the BIOS from dell.com/support using the executable file
      10. After a successful BIOS update go back to step c, to enable the Windows update
    • Update the BIOS from a USB stick using the computer pre-boot option
      1. Copy the executable file to external storage (USB flash drive)
      2. Keep the USB connected and restart the computer
      3. Press F12 to enter One-Time Boot Settings (reference Flashing the BIOS from the F12 One-Time Boot Menu)

We kindly ask you to test it and provide your feedback.

Should only be a few minutes. Sounds like something is not right. There's a thread here that list some issues with various BIOS updates.

BIOS update issues:

Impacted system models & BIOS :
Aurora R16 impacted BIOS 2.14.0 released on 10 Jan 2025
Aurora R15 impacted BIOS 1.18.0 released on 09 Jan 2025
Alienware Aurora Ryzen Edition R10 impacted BIOS 2.10.0 released on 13 Jan 2025
Alienware x17 R2/ Alienware x17 R1 impacted BIOS 1.24.0 released on 13 Jan 2025
XPS 8960 2.13.0 impacted BIOS 1.23.0 released on 10 Jan 2025
XPS 8950 1.23.0 impacted BIOS 2.13.0 released on 10 Jan 2025

To get this fix, uninstalled Windows update KB5050009 from computer, reboot and attempt BIOS update. After reboot, run Windows Update again

Is this the time to update the BIOS after reboot, or the time taken to download/unpack before rebooting and actually installing the BIOS?

How are you installing the BIOS?

I am using the support assist feature. The bios has downloaded and verified.

It is when I click the install button that it takes so long.

@Vanadiel I am not great at tech. This is why I  bought a prebuilt machine. I very cautiously updated the 3 software items the assist said needed it.

My machine is running pretty good, I may leave this alone because I am not  confident enough to go ahead.

Thank you the advice on how to fix this problem though I appreciate it. Maybe I will just take it to a shop and let them  fix it.

@DELL-Nat M

I checked and I do not have this numbered update on my computer. The last updates and there are 3 were installed on the 16  of January.

2025-01 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 23H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5050021)

the other 2 were security and Net framework updates.
