Aurora R16, RTX 3090 Bios Flash

Has anyone tried a Bios flash on their 3090 GPU, if so which Bios did you use to flash? It's an Alienware card, always had what's considered low scores for a 3090 in 3DMark, around 18800 - 19200, which is 3080 territory. My actual temps on this card are very good after modding, so it's not thermal issues.

If you are talking about cross flashing that is typically blocked by Nvidia. On top of that, the Dell OEM has design decisions made that would make it not compatible with certain bios features like under-volting or power requirements.

That's a real shame as there is performance left in the locker with their 3090

@Jonny They are power and voltage locked. At least the RTX 3080 I have is, so I am assuming it's the same with the RTX 3090.

I also felt it could do better and there was some thermal headroom left, especially with under-volting, but it's locked out.

Since the BIOS files are locked by Nvidia, there's little hope of cross flashing.

I did read an article recently that the Nvidia flasher security options were bypassed, so cross flashing is apparently a possibility again.

I am just posting this here for reference, do not attempt this as you will likely brick your 3090: Nvidia cross flash

Only flash with the official Dell updates, if they are available. And even then I would not really recommend it, since again there's no backup BIOS switch like on my current AMD card. Don't want to turn your card in an expensive brick...

Nobody should buy a prebuilt Dell and expect bleeding edge performance.

The upside is I sure do see a lot of old Dell's around still alive and kicking.

How many of those tweaked to the max systems last that long?

Honestly, what I would consider bleeding Engle performance is 3090 FGTW3 Ultra pulling 690 watts in its standard Bios. Fact is the Dell 3090 gets whipped by a 3080 by other manufacturers.

@Jonny System components need to match for maximum performance. The maximum performance processor for the Area-51 R5 is the Intel i9-9980XE 18 core 36 thread 165 watts TDP. I added the best matched graphics card for that CPU in the nVidia RTX 3080 Founders Edition, and 64GB Crucial Ballistix CL16 3200 MHz XMP RAM. The 1500 watt PSU is OEM.

An RTX 3090 would be bottlenecked by the CPU, otherwise I would have one in there.

I tend to think the Dell guys value stability over raw performance, and I think as long as that performance hit isn't very noticeable, that's fine.

I have never really O/C'd my systems over the years for that very reason.

Ok Ok....I am now guilty of turning on this XPS 8950 of mine's O/C feature. :)

I do have a nice R4 across the room that I acquired a while back and it's still a beast (put my old 970GTX in it).

I wonder how much longer that water cooler will last.

Would be tempting to replace the CPU with an Extreme series Intel CPU and replace the water cooler at some point.

I can say Dell finally put out a decent AW chassis with the R16 (sorry AW case lovers).

Wished that was an option when I went XPS 8950 but alas......

@Jonny

I just haven't seen a huge hit in practical terms.

I think my Dell branded 3060 TI is probably a tad slower vs the retail versions, but do I really notice?

Probably not....
