Aurora R16, fail to connect wireless at boot

I have a lab with ten (10) Dell Alienware Aurora R16 desktops running Windows 11 Professional that have been configured to connect to our wireless network. They successfully connect to the network and I can browse the Internet at the time the wireless network is added, but when the desktop is rebooted it does not automatically reconnect to the wireless network. There is also no option at the Windows logon screen to connect to a wireless network. The only option shown is "Airplane mode".

This is problematic because these desktops are domain joined. It prevents domain users from logging in because the system is not connected to the network so it cannot contact the domain controller to authenticate the user. To reconnect to the network, I must log in using a local user account and once logged in, then the wireless network automatically reconnects. I can log off the local user and then the network is available at the log on screen for a domain user to log on. But, if the desktop is rebooted the problem reoccurs. Logging in as a local user and logging off each time before a domain user can log in is not a feasible solution.

In short, the main problem is the desktop not automatically connecting to the wireless network after a reboot and that the option to connect to wireless networks is missing from the Windows logon screen.

My hunch is that the drivers for the wireless card are not loaded until after log on.

Here are the steps I have taken to troubleshoot:

Verified that the Wireless Network Properties were set to "Network availability: All users", "Connect automatically when the network is in range" and "Connect even if the network is not broadcasting its name (SSID)

Great, thanks a lot for sharing that!

I can confirm it is caused by the "OS Kernal DMA Support". Just disable that option and your wifi will be turned on before login.

my Alienware R16 desktop also does not connect to Wi-Fi on startup of windows 11, it only connects to our Wi-Fi card in this desktop after you log into windows 11, my pc is used for gaming so I have to turn off Gog galaxy, steam, epic games launcher, EA Games app, from startup items, since its a few seconds after it connects to the Wi-Fi, also if you click on edge right after you log into windows 11 its a few minutes before it redirects you to bing.com homepage. also, in lockscreen the Wi-Fi icon only has airplane mode, which you don't even need for a home desktop pc, Windows 11 home is what this desktop came with, it has an Intel I9 processor, and NVidia RTX 4080 Super 3D card which is what I wanted for playing my epic games from their launcher. it's not a big problem for me, but compared to my gigabyte DDR 3 pc, that connects with windows 11 right away upon bootup, but the Alienware does not, I think its a settings in the bios that might control this feature maybe? it's like not fully having USB on if you use fast bootup on the gigabyte dual bios desktop. the Alienware R16 I have has 32GB of DDR5 RAM.

*** Here is the fix ***
It is not Windows (I did a clean install with 24H2 (latest)). It is not your wireless NIC and/or wireless NIC driver. I replace it with Intel BE200 (WiFi 7). It is not some power settings or anything inside Windows. I spend days tried everything to finally figure this stupid issue out. It is caused by your R16's BIOS security settings. It is not Secure Boot and/or TPM. It is other security settings. Trying toggle them all off and reboot. The WiFI will connect to your preferred SSID before login again. I replicate this fix multiple times and it works

I am glad this fix help someone else. I see others post similar threads in Reddits about this issue.  I re-posted there too.

Yeah, I was not sure which one and instead of disabling one at a time (process of elimination method). I do not need them in my environment. The DMA cause all kind of issues with some AAA games anyways.

On the side note, I am running pro in an AD environment.  This is causing issue with new AD user (cache disabled) and DC pushing down gpupdates without initial machine WiFi access.

Thank you. Disabling the OS kernel DMA support has resolved the Wi-Fi issue. Now, when Windows 11 boots up, the Wi-Fi card connects to our home router, just as my Gigabyte DDR3 PC with Windows does, even though the older desktop lacks a TPM device. This fix enables the connection before the Windows 11 login prompt appears. I've left the pre-DMA support setting enabled, which is above the OS Kernel DMA Support. For some reason, the Wi-Fi card in the Alienware R16 DDR5 system requires this setting to be disabled to connect to the internet upon Windows startup. It's unclear why this was enabled by default in the BIOS on these new PCs. Additionally, I have the Intel i9 processor and chose the Nvidia RTX GeForce 4080 Super 3D card for it.

You are welcome.  This bugs me because this affect me adversely due to my AD environment (mentioned above).  I too have similar build as yours with i-9, 32G RAM, 1TB M2 and RTX4080 super.  I got it for Black Friday deal and 10% mail rebate for total $1799 shipped.  I swap the AX WIFI card with Intel BE200 (WIFI 7) for another Black Friday deal for $26 at Amazon and swap out the 1TB M2 with a Samsung 990 Pro 2TB M2 in my older rig.

I prefer WIFI as Win11 24H2 officially support Wifi7 and I am getting 5Gbps DL/UP about 10 ft from my Asus GT-98BE Pro. The Killer Ethernet in Aurora 16 is only 2.5Gbps so I can connected at double speed via Wifi.  I am getting 3.5 to 4 Gbps over local LAN using the 10Gbps ports on the router. I can get sustain download of 2Gbps from BattleNet and 1.5Gbps from Steam.  I have 10Gbps fiber internet connection.

My desktop still has the original Wifi 6A card, not Wifi 7, but it did receive the Windows 24H2 update. I had to perform a factory reset because the Windows 11 24H2 update caused some issues with my Alienware R16 PC's settings. However, it's beneficial for applications like Epic Games Launcher, Steam, and GOG Galaxy, EA games, Ubisoft connect, which all prefer a web connection when logging into Windows 11. It's great to have resolved that issue. Previously, I was disabling these gaming apps from auto-loading on startup in Task Manager, but this fix has made that unnecessary. if you like keeping some of the gaming apps under the system tray, then that bios setting does need to be off and not on by default.

My desktop still has the original Wifi 6A card, not the new Wifi 7, but it did receive the Windows 24H2 update again in the windows 11 update system. I had done a factory reset a few weeks ago because the Windows 11 24H2 update caused some issues with my Alienware R16 PC's settings.

However, it's beneficial for applications like Epic Games Launcher, Steam, and GOG Galaxy, EA games, Ubisoft connect, which all prefer a web connection when logging into Windows 11. It's great to have resolved that issue with turning that bios setting off the OS kernel DMA support seems to have a problem with are wifi cards or thats a feature if so as a pc gamer that needs the gaming apps working I don't like it for that reason. Previously, I was disabling these gaming apps from auto-loading on startup in Task Manager, but this fix has made that unnecessary. if you like keeping some of the gaming apps under the system tray, then that bios setting does need to be off and not on by default.

The Wi-Fi card in my system is the Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6E AX210 160MHz, and it's installed in an Alienware R16 PC. I previously misidentified it as a Wi-Fi 6A in this forum. However, disabling the OS kernel DMA support in the BIOS, which I updated to the latest version from their download site, fixed the issue where the Wi-Fi card wouldn't connect before logging into Windows 11, now updated to 24h2. If I were to perform a factory reset, I'm not sure if it would revert to 23h2. Does Alienware update the factory reset software with such updates to avoid re-downloading them after a reset? I was curious about that.

Sorry to hear that about you are having issue with in-place (dirty) upgrade of Windows 11.  I mentioned before that I did a clean install of 24H2 ISO using RUFUS.  I and playing D4 (Vessel of Hatred) via BattleNet and Steam app games without any issue for a week now.  Due current gen i-9 issue.  I immediately firmware it and no crashes or BSOD.  Upgrade to Intel BE200 is definitely worth it.  It doubles the speed for about $30.  It is also not too hard to swap it out the AX and replace with BE200.

Yes, this works with the OEM Wifi6/6e card or upgrade to wifi 7 card (Be200).  My son had his stock with Wifi6e card and works too.

I typically use Rufus with my USB drive on my Gigabyte PC, which has DDR3 memory. I enjoy experimenting with various Linux distributions, such as Ubuntu Debian based also Kubuntu packages are Deb based, Arch Linux, Fedora Silverblue with GNOME, and Kinoite with KDE which both are based off of Redhat linux RPM based, and KDE Neon which is like Debian and using Ubuntu right now on my older desktop sometimes I use linux on it and my older laptop ASUS brand republic of gamers laptop. I have not yet installed Linux on my Alienware because it is still under warranty. For the same reason, I am sticking with the OEM version of Windows 11, which I believe is valid until 2026. I am also reluctant to install a Wi-Fi 7 card in my new PC due to uncertainty about its compatibility with our AT&T U-verse router, particularly since we reside in a rural area of California. I had a Gigabyte PC with DDR5, but it ceased functioning. My current Alienware R16 is its replacement. It featured an AORUS Z690 Master motherboard inside a Cooler Master HAF Evo 700 case. Unfortunately, the case or power supply failed, and it would not power on despite attempts to replace them. It was outfitted with an older Intel i9 processor, not the 14th generation, a Cooler Master dual fan for the CPU, and a GeForce RTX 3080 3D card. It also had a Wi-Fi 6 card built into the motherboard. I chose the Alienware R16 for its simpler case design after the IRIS display on the Cooler Master case crashed repeatedly over a year, which was quite frustrating. I tried applying the firmware patch multiple times, but eventually, something malfunctioned with the case, motherboard, or power supply—I'm not sure which. Occasionally, not all the RGB lights in the case would turn off during shutdown. I had DDR5 memory with RGB lighting, as well as RGB lights on the motherboard, graphics card, and fans. It's still not fixed, and that computer was stored by my parents when I got the replacement. I didn't encounter these issues with the older Cooler Master and Gigabyte DualBIOS PC. Its model is G1 Assassin 2 rev-1 with an Intel® X79 Chipset, and it has an Intel i7 processor. It originally ran Windows 8, then was upgraded to Windows 10 and 11. It lacks TPM, making Rufus essential. Although it runs a bit slowly, it can run Windows 11 24h2 without any problems. We don't recall it ever having a TPM when we built it. I was also unable to get the z690 aorus master to work correctly again, which is why I switched to a newer Alienware PC. My older desktop even has DVD/Blu-ray drive ports in the case; that's how old it is.

when it comes to Linux, I also used Slackware, gentoo and tried a few other distros some run ok while others I avoid. I like gnome for laptop's and kde plasma for desktops for the most part.

I can confirm disabling "OS Kernel DMA Support" in the Dell BIOS under the Security menu resolves the issue. Thank you!
