Aurora R15, issues so far

Alienware Aurora R15

Alienware Aurora R15

Here is just a list of issues I've encountered so far:

1. SA (SupportAssist) will cause video and audio stutters randomly.
(Uninstalling SA fixed this issue)

2. A split-second static noise when the system goes from no sound to sound. This doesn't always occur but it is annoying when it does. I am using the latest sound driver downloaded from the Dell website.

3. Performance power option missing from Windows and AWCC (Alienware Command Center). You can see it from this JustIN Tech Tips Youtube

4. Strange video tearing when streaming and video playback on certain things.
(Power management mode set to "Prefer maximum performance under NVIDIA Control Panel fixes this issue)

I contacted another user on Reddit with the same Aurora R15 configuration and funny enough he is also having the same issue.

Finally found a workaround for all the listed issues.

For the sound cut-off issue, here is the fix.

-Open Device manager, under sound, video and game controllers, right click realtek audio.
-Select update driver.
-Click on browse my computer for drivers.
-Let me pick from a list of drivers available on my computer, then uncheck 'Show compatible hardware'. -Chose Microsoft as the manufacturer, and select High Definition Audio Device version 10.0.22621.608.
-Click next. Let it install the driver and restart the PC.

To fix the missing High Performance Power option:

-open AWCC
-open CMD as admin
-type "powercfg /s SCHEME_MIN
-type "POWERCFG.CPL"
-make sure high performance is selected
-go back to AWCC
-Under the FUSION tab, click NEW PROFILE and then select high performance.
-Click OK
-go back to AWCC home page.
-Click power then select high preformance

But seriously, why there are issues to begin with a 4k rig... I hope Dell will patch it soon.

What is your configuration . . . and what do your thermals look like; relaxed & stressed?

1. Not surprising, but good trouble-shooting, never-the-less.

2. sounds like maybe audio-device is powering-down needlessly?

3. Strange. Are you looking in (Legacy) Control-Panel? If so, I've seen that on recent Windows-11 UltraBooks, but never a desktop. As far as missing from AW-CC, I would not worry (it's Windows that matters).

4. Try these settings:

Windows-11 Game-Mode is On (Enabled).
- Windows Security/ Device Security/ Core Isolation/ Memory Integrity = OFF
- Control Panel/ Programs And Features/ Turn Windows Features On-Off/ Virtual Machine Platform = OFF
Windows-11 in Settings/Display/Graphics
- Set these to High Performance (ie. use the dedicated Nvidia Graphics card)
- - for Steam, Origin, Epic, XBox App, or any other DRM and/or game Launchers
- - Fallout-76, World or Warcraft, or any Direct-X game.
- - Also any programs and Apps that are graphically demanding.
Windows-11 in Settings/Display/Graphics/Change Default Graphics Settings
- Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) is DISABLED
My Nvidia RTX-3080 driver is Game-Ready v511.79 WHQL (DCH)

NVIDIA Control Panel, 3D settings (for fallout76.exe or your game's main-exe file).
Vertical Sync.
- Enable and set to FAST (suppose to stop tearing, but with speed closer to Off than full On ).
Note: This is for a Non-G-Sync monitor/config.

Thank you for the reply.

I am just surprised that a $4k+ system has all these issues out of the box.

I'm not surprised to be honest.  Proprietary system with small testing pool in a short time.

AFAIK, it's just a preset for the Advanced options provided. For one thing (on my systems) it sets Minimum and Maximum Processor Speed both to 100%. So, it's always at full-speed and will Turbo-Boost as needed. Also, tends to set various devices to full-speed and none-to-little Sleeping. However, it's still SpeedSteps and the other related technologies.

It is a $1.5K system that you paid Dell $0.5K to build for you . . . then you paid an additional $2.0K for the Alienware branding.

Sure, it would be nice if it was perfect out-of-box.

Hopefully, those video settings will help (or new drivers soon) ... all the stuff in that machine is very new.

Personally, I don't see anything too alarming in that list.

"It is a $1.5K system that you paid Dell $0.5K to build for you . . . then you paid an additional $2.0K for the Alienware branding."

I get the point but it's a little bit more than that. The 4090 at minimum is $1600 and that's if you can find one. If you do find one, add another $600-900 on top of that. The CPU is $600 and that doesn't include RAM, or storage. So parts alone at MSRP you can figure about $2500 and the rest is for Dell which includes warranty, marketing, shipping, support and employee overhead.

As has been mentioned before and we here are all aware. You can build a system for MSRP and bypass everything else but if you want the latest and greatest NOW, that will cost you.

Also keep in mind, we don't know if the OP used discount coupons. I put together an R15 maxed out with 32GB of RAM @ 5200Mhz for $3350 plus sales tax. That's not too bad.

I was being facetious . . . of course. However, while you can purchase a RTX 4090 at best Buy for $1,600 . . . when Dell goes to MSI and orders a million units, the price might be less.

case: $200

cpu: 13900k $675

RAM: 32GB DDR5 5600 $388

1TB nvme ssd $120

motherboard $369

4090 $1600

psu $176

cooling $250

Total $3778

That's pricing I paid back in April (not the 4090 of course).  I can get some of that lower today.

That looks about right. Though the benefit of going with Dell now is that you get the latest and greatest but at the cost of pretty much everything inside the machine being proprietary including the GPU, motherboard, PSU and case.

It kind of takes me back when I was a computer field technician in the early 90's and the PC's I would service were pretty much proprietary such as V-Tech, Packard Bell, Compaq etc. Thankfully the industry seems to be moving away from Dell's approach, such as the HP Omen and Corsair Vengeance PC's. When you are paying as much for a system as Dell wants, the least you can do is allow some flexibility. With each new system revision they seem to be locking down their gaming rigs, more and more.

Trying to find one at Best Buy at MSRP is currently going to be tough. I tried and it is out of stock. The last gen cards are now pretty common. Amazon has the 6950 XT for $799 which isn't too bad although I would prefer the 7xxx series GPU's.
