Aurora R15, AMD AM5 CPU upgrade

As much as I have struggled with compatability since buying my R15, it seems that Dell/Alienware might be coming around to supporting upgrades.

I spoke with tech support about a GPU issue (that is another story) and I asked if they will be releasing BIOS updates to support the new AMD Processsors as I'd like to upgrade to the new 9950X3D, as of now it seems like yes. I'm hopeful that they actually go through with it, fingers crossed.

good to know.  it is Aurora 15 AMD.

PS

Dell may deploy PSB vendor lock of Ryzen cpu booting on oem board.  the cpu would not be usable on other non-Dell motherboard.

@redxps630 I hope they don’t practice this…

@Mendomar06 They did with the R10, so they might again with the R15. You can check for PSB lock prior to the upgrade, to confirm.

@Mendomar06 @Vanadiel @redxps630

This is great and encouraging news!
But It would be interesting to know how long it will take Dell to release the update…

Already tired of my friends' japing that I can't install a good gaming CPU in the top-end PC :-)

@Dimsky we’ll see, I was going to put a 9950x3rd in mine to see if the new bios update worked but even at waking up at 1am to try to buy one they were already sold out.

@Mendomar06 Let me know if you can do it, please. I can't wait for that opportunity :-)
I'm  Escape from Tarkov' player, so it's a very CPU-dependent game. The AMD X3D CPU seems to be a gamechanger.

@Mendomar06  Hey I want to use this CPU on my AMD R15, how did it work for you, and which Bios version do you have on your motherboard ?

Thanks

IF you put a CPU in to "test", be aware they might have enabled PSB locking in the BIOS in which case your CPU will not function in any other motherboard.

So unless you are willing to take a gamble, I would not try it unless it's confirmed to work properly.

Thanks Vanadiel, I reached out to dell support again, and they said officially the 9950X3d is not supported in the R15 motherboard. No answer what so ever if the PSB locking is enabled or can even be disabled. I even asked about any future Bios updates or even a beta bios to test the feature and new CPU.

I think it is quite unfortunate as this AMD R15 system  is really quite a good system, and really should allow enthusiast owners to upgrade it with new or improved hardware once deemed compatible with the motherboards AMD chipset.

I haven't gotten the CPU, I placed the order and my bank flagged it as fraud, cancelling the order and I got side tracked and haven't reordered it. I got a little distracted with what is supposed to be showing up soon...

@linked99 Just saw your post, after already posting mine; If that's the case I'm going to hold off on the CPU and just order all the parts to build a new system. I like my R15, it's been a decently solid rig, but I like to tinker, and this system doesn't satisfy the itch. It'll be a good hand me down system for my kids to game and do homework on.
