Aurora R13, install 12th Gen i3-12100F CPU?
I took my parts out of the R13 and put it in a new case for future upgrade options, so now my R13 is missing a 1700 socket cpu is it fine to put this CPU in it [cpu] (Amazon.com: Intel Core 12th Gen i3-12100F desktop processor, featuring PCIe Gen 5.0 & 4.0 support, DDR5, and DDR4 support. Discrete graphics required.). Like its the same 1700 socket right so it should still work? I am planning on giving my Aurora R13 to my nephew. It will be an upgrade from what he has currently he has which is an 8 year old Alienware 17 R4.

It should be fine inasmuch as the Z690 chipset is compatible with that CPU. The R13 shows as originally available here with the i3 gen at Hardware Corner and being a 1700 socket it should work well.

12100F is not listed as compatible with the R13, so it will likely not work.
R13 CPU's.

@Vanadiel Hard to say as Hardware Corner lists it as a compatible CPU...worth a try to see if it works well.

i5-12400F is validated and also included in Dell spec
https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/66735597
so i3-12100F is likely compatible
Dell does not offer it simply because it is a low end cpu not befitting flagship gaming pc when it came out, but Dell does not intentionally block it in R13 bios.

@redxps630 what about this one Tested Intel SR32P i7-7820HK BGA CPU Chip Chipset | eBay does it need to be soldered?

neither is compatible
R13 requires LGA 1700 socket compatible cpu

@redxps630
You can try, but if the microcode is not included in the BIOS image it will not work.
I think we had something similar with the AMD 3Dx series, who were not listed as officially validated either. I don't remember if it ended up working or not.

The 600 series chipset natively supports all the 12th gen Intel cpu. Dell would simply import the complete list of microcode from Intel. I don’t think Dell would select a few cpu microcode out of the complete list and not include the rest. Dell simply does not bother to validate i3-12th gen cpu due to marketing reason.

@redxps630 They did the same with the R10. That chipset supports both Ryzen 3000 and Ryzen 5000 CPU's, yet Dell split the firmware up so you could not upgrade your 3000 to a 5000 without purchasing at least a new motherboard.
Both AM4 and AM5 platforms are designed to support multiple generations of processors.
They also did the same thing with Intel platforms. The Intel 600 series chipsets are designed to support 12th, 13th, and 14th generation Intel Core processors.
I can guarantee 99.9% that a 14000 series will not boot on the R12, or even the R13 due to missing firmware,
Unless it's specifically on the list of supported CPU's I would recommend a try, but it can become expensive fast.

Re: The Intel 600 series chipsets are designed to support 12th, 13th, and 14th generation Intel Core processors.
when the 600 came out, only 12th gen cpu were out.
to support later 13/14th gen, a bios update is needed.
intel said "Intel® 600 and Intel® 700 Series motherboards may require the latest BIOS/FW/CSME from manufacturer when upgrading between Intel® Core™ Desktop Processors 12th, 13th or 14th gen. Refer to BIOS Updates."
but here we are discussing within the 13th gen, did Dell bios update selectively support cpu excluding i3 13th gen or all 13th gen. I think more likely the latter. I presume such bios update is categorical. without it, none of the 13th gen is supported. with it, all 13th gen do. I do not think the Dell bios update excludes i3-13th gen. this is OP's original concern.
AMD is a different story. It is not due to Dell intentional bios restriction. The original R10 motherboard has a too small bios chip to accommodate larger bios size needed to support 5000 series. It took a revised 2011 R10 board that has a large bios chip to support both 3000 and 5000 Ryzen. this was discussed elsewhere on the forum.

to illustrate Dell track record,
Aurora R9 Dell spec cpu list does not include any i3 9th gen,
R9 has 300 seies chipset and includes a bios update to support 9th gen cpu
9th Generation Intel Core i5k
9th Generation Intel Core i7k
9th Generation Intel Core i9k
Alienware Aurora R9 Setup and Specifications | Dell US
yet user is able to validate i3-9100 in R9
Alienware Aurora R9 Performance Results - UserBenchmark
as long as the cpu is within same family, there is positive evidence to predict it will likely work

@redxps630 Yes, but it did not. The new R10 board only supports Ryzen 5000 CPU's. So even after they added a larger BIOS memory chip to accommodate the larger BIOS image allegedly needed, they excluded backward compatibility by excluding the Ryzen 3000s series firmware on the new R10 motherboard.
All I know is I run a retail AM4 board and it supports every Ryzen CPU model on the latest BIOS revision. I never have to worry about it and I still get AGESA updates where the original R10 is still to this day stuck on a completely outdated AGESA version. I think it's still using AGESA 1.0.02.
