Aurora R12, driver update failure

G'day,  In the last month attempts to check for R12 driver updates has been unsuccessful. If the SupportAssist is used it will provide a message that reads "An unexpected error occurred.  Please try again.".  In the History tab it reads "Drivers & Downloads Scan (Manual) - No updates available - Error - January 26, 2023 10:00:00:40".

Alternatively using dell.com  Support Home  -> Drivers & Downloads results in a boxed message "This service is temporarily unavailable.".

Admittedly my unit is long out of service contract, but I still get emails advising me of critical updates and I've had good success until about a month ago.

Curious, anyone else seeing this issue?

Thanks

Friday:  With some fine help from Damia at Dell support we performed a clean O.S. replacement including all app and file removal.  Drivers were all then carefully updated for Dell, W11, and Nvidia.  Next the Dell support applications were installed including Support Assistant and we were able to demonstrate full functionality of the driver update using either S.A. or dell.com/support home.   All looking good.

She then allowed me to begin application installation such as M.S. 365 tools, Norton 360, Lightroom, etc. and through all this both mechanisms for driver update functioned as expected.   Damia then ran a comprehensive series of verification and troubleshooting scans to test the system integrity which all went well.  She then rang-off and I proceeded with app re-population.  Periodically I'd test for updates and suddenly it failed just as I'd seen before.   Get....out!!!  "This service is temporarily unavailable."

Backtracking item by item it was conclusively identified as a specific setting in NORD VPN.

* The second icon at the upper left is for Threat Protection:

Notice that dell.com was blocked 36 times.  If one clicks on the dell.com line item a report opens:

Select "Allow everything" to close this and the previous Threat Protection display shows dell.com greyed out and the shield icon now has a slash through it.

In this setup the dell.com support home behaves as expected.

No, I have no idea how this feature got changed in my system unless it came onboard with an update. I've used NORD for a couple of years on several machines with good luck. Maybe I'm just clumsy.

If any of you would care to verify this, I'd appreciate the feedback.

Heavy sigh!

All drivers for the R12 can be directly downloaded from the link below. It will scan your service tag and provide you a list with all the driver available for your R12.

Vanadiel,

Of course, you are correct, and this is the second method I'd mentioned above.  Using the link you just provided the result is unfortunately the same these days.  It reads "This service is temporarily unavailable".   Are you not seeing this issue?

I had good luck with it until about three weeks ago.

Thanks....

Yes, using that method was the first way I found this issue.   It always results in the temporarily unavailable message.

If you click on find drivers on that page, what do you get?

Of course, I don't know how the Dell website works but I wonder if the Support Assistant is somehow encountering a similar limitation.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it; I've had Dell driver download stop working only to start up again after a few weeks with no action on my part.

Out of curiosity I just checked, and the web download site worked fine for manual lookups, but the auto gave me nothing but an error message.  Then I ran Alienware Update and it found a program to update and ran fine.  Go figure!

No luck today on Auto...No luck today on Auto...This worked fine. This worked fine.

Regrettably the problem persists on the Dell website and the Temporarily Unavailable message occurs for several of the tabs. Documentation, Party & Accessories, and Drivers & Downloads tabs all result in the error box "This service is temporarily unavailable".

It looks like Doghouse Reilly has an R9 so I'd ask the community:  Is anyone else with an R12 seeing this difficulty?

Thanks for your insight.

I don't know as I don't use any of that.

When running Windows-11, Windows-Update will give you everything you need.

Between Windows-11's Windows-Update and video-drivers (from nvidia.com or amd.com) you should have everything you need. Only exception I can think of is the occasional Alienware BIOS/Firmware update (which you can easily download and install from it's direct download page). And even then, I would not do it if already running a fairly recent version and everything is already working properly.

Log out of the Dell web site, and go to the driver site without being logged in.

I am not experiencing any issues with that web page.

Morning,

As always, thanks for the inputs.  I do attempt every recommendation but again today the problem persists.

On Monday, (it's now Thursday), I again contacted Dell support and a generous support engineer exercised my system remotely for the best part of an hour.   At the conclusion of that effort the problem was to be forwarded to a Dell web-support agency.   As I'd mentioned there are two avenues of update that are thwarted.  If I use SupportAssist it will present an error message that reads "An unexpected error occurred. Please try again", and if I go to Dell.com  Support home (logged in or not) it will present the message "This service is temporarily unavailable".  This message is presented for multiple tabs on that page including Drivers and Download, Documentation, and Parts and Accessories.  It is this clue that causes me to suspect the web pages.

So again, I'd like to humbly ask, is anyone using an R12 seeing the same behavior?

My most recent contact from the active Dell investigator has recommended " We recommend contacting our Dell care team and inform the issue to them so they can also check from the backend. You can directly contact our Dell care at 1800-624-9897 and report them the issue."

I'll do that now.

Again, thanks for your insight.

Today a support engineer again performed a remote access troubleshooting process and thus far this has been attempted.  Again, there are two paths to driver updates that are both encountering difficulties and I’ll try to keep the activities unique to each separate here:

Support Assist: “An unexpected error occurred. Please try again.”

  • The Support Assist app was uninstalled and reinstalled. (3.12.3)  When run, it did successfully find that five updates were available including a BIOS update.   Installation was attempted on the entire set but not all completed.   Fortunately, the BIOS update was installed properly.  W11 also had an optional update that was completed but in the end this is the status using S.A.
  • G_Day_Mate_0-1675367085155.png

Dell.com  Support Home: “This service is temporarily unavailable.”

  • The support engineer was able to readily reproduce this difficulty on more than one of the tabs.
  • Edge and Chrome were both uninstalled and reinstalled.  The difficulty remained in both.  (It’s not the browser.)
  • Two utilities were run from the command line as Administrator:
    • > dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
    • > SFC /scannow     (This reported that corrupt files were found and corrected.)
  • Regrettably the problem remains.  “This service is temporarily unavailable.”

The support engineer as recommended an O.S. “Reset this PC” and has asked that I purchase a single event problem correction.   Which I’ve now done.

A 16Gb flash drive is formatted and ready for the support engineer to begin the process. I also saved a current restore point and my system is rigorously backed up.   Should be good to go and I’ll report back with news of success.

Also, the NVIDIA driver was updated through their utility.

I also attempted to uninstall and reinstall the Alienware Command Center app and it went through the uninstall process but in System Settings I see the app and it has no size.  Then I downloaded the installation tool and the sequence starts but it then informs me that a more current version is installed, and I must first uninstall the app.    Alas, no Alienware Command Center app at this point.

Film at eleven.

Try an incognito window in Chrome. That will rule out any browser issues.

Well, I was thinking about this yesterday actually and I was going to ask you if you had any kind of firewall or router running that was not part of your default ISP setup. I was thinking it had something to do with your actual internet connection.

If we would have known you are using a VPN for internet access we could have solved this without requiring a complete reinstallation of the OS...

At least you are up and running again.

So glad to see your problem was rectified.

My Webpage Dell updater started working on its own today; seems the bugs were removed with no action on my part.
