Aurora R10 Ryzen Edition BIOS Update 2.1.0 Fails

I have had no problem updating my BIOS until today. When running the BIOS 2.1.0 update I get the message ERROR:

DRIVER VERSION FAILED.

I always turn off Norton Antivirus before downloading and before executing the BIOS update.

Anyone else having same problem or know of a solution?

Hi everyone,

The steps below shall help mitigate the issue. As soon as new BIOS updates are available, they will be added to Dell.com/support

Current workaround
:

  1. Workaround:

    • Uninstall the January Windows KB update that corresponds to your system.: KB5050009, KB5050021, or KB5050009 update:

      1. Open Settings
      2. Select Windows Update
      3. Pause the Windows update
      4. Select Update history
      5. Select Uninstall updates
      6. Find the impacted update according to the operating system version used, labeled KB5050009, KB5050021, and KB5049981
      7. Select Uninstall
      8. Restart your computer
      9. Install the BIOS from dell.com/support using the executable file
      10. After a successful BIOS update go back to step c, to enable the Windows update
    • Update the BIOS from a USB stick using the computer pre-boot option
      1. Copy the executable file to external storage (USB flash drive)
      2. Keep the USB connected and restart the computer
      3. Press F12 to enter One-Time Boot Settings (reference Flashing the BIOS from the F12 One-Time Boot Menu)

We kindly ask you to test it and provide your feedback.

OK I saw from another post that is known to Dell and they are working on a solution.

Same thing happened to me...

I have tried downloading both the .exe from https://dl.dell.com/FOLDER12332515M/1/Alienware_Aurora_Ryzen_Edition_2.9.1.exe

and the recovery file from here https://dl.dell.com/FOLDER12335916M/1/BIOS_IMG.rcv

to follow the recovery procedure. Both failed. the .exe failed with a message above (Driver version failed), the recovery did not like the .rcv file, but when I renamed the first file it started and then failed.

I tried downloading many different versions from the website using product tag, and all have failed in the same way...

I also tried updating using "Alienware Update" software and got the same message.

My current BIOS (2.5.0) is 16Mb in size but those two are smaller and bigger than that if it gives any clue.

I think the best thing to do is wait until a new version is announced or Dell announces a new solution. That is what I am going to do.

I have the R10 and don't even have that KB5050009 update as I'm still using 23H2, and it still failed.

I'd rather wait for a final fix than trying to venture updating the BIOS via a USB key.

@DELL-Nat M it did not work. Not even using F12 and not Ctrl+Esc (the recovery). Not 2.10.0 and not 2.9.1.

With F12 it hangs after file selection and confirmation and stays gray forever. With Ctrl+Esc and .rcv screen stays black, with the EXE renamed to BIOS_IMG.rcv it takes to a full update menu and fails with another error “BIOS recovery image found but invalid.”
I have Aurora 10 Ryzen Edition btw, it is not listed btw…

To be honest, if everything works properly there's no need to update the BIOS.

I would just wait until the next known stable release, as a bad flash can brick these motherboards which would cause a lot of issues.

In the email notification I got it says:

"This update addresses the Dell Security Advisories (DSA). A security advisory is a statement when a security vulnerability impacts a product, and a remedy is available for the vulnerability." and it labels the update as critical.

So it sounds to me that the BIOS update does not address any functionality issues but patches a security issue or vulnerability.

Hi everyone,

Please note that there are a few changes in the current workaround for the BIOS update issue. For the latest instructions, please refer to the updated solution on this thread.

@Vanadiel Exactly! As the old saying goes: "If ain't broke, don't fix it". My R10 is many BIOS versions in the past, like 3 years ago and everything works fine.
