Aurora R10, CPU upgrade from 5950x?
Hi everyone, I have the above machine in desperate need upgrade the CPU! I've upgraded the GPU to a Nvidia GeForce RXT 3070ti and I'll also be upgrading the RAM. Has anyone successfully upgraded to a Ryzen 5000 series? I have a 5950x with BIOS version 2.8.0 and I'm getting a black screen! Thanks in advance for the support!

@sm56 hey so I know this is an old post but did you ever find an updated BIOS?! I'm working on a Alienware Aurora Ryzen edition r10 trying to upgrade the 3700x to a 5950x and have BIOS version 2.8.0. I have read on other forums that with the BIOS update it would support Ryzen 5000 series but I'm getting a black screen with the same "alien guy LED codes"!! Have you heard of anyone being able to successfully upgrade yet?!

if you had the original R10 oem board NWN7M it does not support 5000 Ryzen.

If you had a Ryzen 3000 R10, it does not support Ryzen 5000 CPU's therefore you get a black screen.

Some of these do support the CPU you purchased; others do not -- see thread below.

@VeliComp1 Nah... I'm still on BIOS 1.0.8 from 2020... Saw no reason to update the BIOS since the AGESA from AMD is not updated... From what I heard, Gen 1 R10's CPU cannot be upgraded to the 5000 series of Ryzen CPU's but you might want to double-check with DELL.
I still like my old Alienware R10 and even put in a MSI Ventus 4070 TI Super and it is still running great. I will be upgrading to an entirely new system sometime next year to either a 9800x3d or a 9950x3d... and the Alienware R10 will be my RV travel trailer computer! 😜👍

When Ryzen 3rd gen was launched, some motherboard manufacturers released new models with bigger bios chips.
the older R10 board does not have a big enough bios chip to support Zen 3 Ryzen 5000 CPU
the newer R10 does.

@sm56 Hey thanks for the reply! So you don't have any bottlenecking issues with the 4070 ti?! I was working with a different machine with a Ryzen 3700x and couldn't figure out why the mouse was lagging, turns out that CPU doesn't work well with the RTX 4000 series!!

@VeliComp1 Only playing Star Citizen does the CPU bottlekneck in heavily populated areas because that game is CPU bound for the most part BUT still quite playable as the load shifts to the GPU out in space and with terrain tessellation, volumetric clouds on planets that don't have big big bases populated by a gazillion NPC's... On the other hand, Cyberpunk 2020 is about even with the GPU bottle knecking a bit more running Path Tracing or Ray tracing in Psycho mode but still get 120 FPS with RT Psycho and around 80 FPS with Path-tracing @1440p in CP2020.

Re: the board is AMMTS-SH
both older and newer R10 have this Pegatron moniker but you need to look at the Dell DP/N on a small white sticker of board to tell which one it is.

@redxps630 Thanks for your reply! All I have is AMMTS-SH (REV: A00) It's the Alienware Aurora Ryzen Edition R10. Are there two versions of that machine? Older & newer?

@VeliComp1 Easiest way is to look at what originally was in there. Ryzen 3000 I am assuming, in which case it will not support Ryzen 5000.

@VeliComp1 Also, another tidbit of information is that they enable PSB at some point, meaning your CPU might be locked to the motherboard and will not work in any other motherboard anymore.
Just a quick word of advice should you consider upgrading to a retail motherboard and case, and try to move the 3700X over. It might not boot due to PSB.
