Handling Job Rejection: Feeling Like You're Screaming into the Void

Job hunting can sometimes feel like shouting into an empty canyon. You send out resumes, tailor your cover letters, and prepare for interviews, only to be met with silence or rejection. It's frustrating,  so here is my list of ways I manage to stay motivated:

  1. Acknowledge Your Feelings: Rejection stings, especially when you've invested time and energy. Allow yourself to feel disappointed, but try not to let it define your self-worth. Reflecting on what went well and what you can improve helps turn disappointment into growth.
  2. Ask for Feedback: If possible, request constructive feedback from interviewers. While not every company provides it, those that do can offer valuable insights to strengthen your future applications.
  3. Do What is in Your Control: Remember that all you can control is your own actions. That means, performing to the best of your ability.
  • Tailor and proofread your resume
  • Practice your interview responses

These are all things within your own control.

  1. Celebrate Small Wins: Even small milestones, like landing an interview or improving your resume, are steps forward. Recognizing these victories keeps momentum going
  2. Remember, you only need one job. No matter how many applications you submit or interviews you go through to get there, you only need one job at the end of the day. It’s out there, waiting for you!

Obviously, I’m not an expert. These are my tips, but I’ve included some links that have helped me shape my own perspective:

The journey to your next role may feel exhausting, but persistence and adaptability will pay off. You've got this!

Love the tips!  Celebrating the small wins is something often overlooked that we should be practicing every day.  Recognizing and emphasizing the accomplishments in life encourages personal growth and rejects negativity.  We should continue to do this not just in the job search, but practice it in daily life.
