Career Readiness | Thoughts and Ideas

Hello SOAR Group,

So many things are happening now—how do you keep up? 😅 Fearing that first interview or new coworkers and thinking, “Will I even know what they are talking about?” Here are some tips on how to look super smart while having a coffee or chatting with a potential new boss:

  1. Stay Informed: Read up on industry news and trends. A quick glance at the latest headlines can give you talking points. Join online conferences and areas in the field.
  2. Ask Questions: It’s okay if you don’t know something; people are usually more than happy to fill you in.
  3. Share Your Insights: Be curious and share your thoughts, like “Is that similar to this or that?” Knowledge is power.
  4. Be Confident: Confidence can make a big difference. You don’t need to be the center of attention, but don’t be afraid to start follow-up conversations.

Add on what you think… What have you learned by asking questions? Any conferences you’ve attended, if someone dominated that coffee talk discussion, did you think hey that person is smart!

Love this, Ben! When I am in networking or coffee conversations, I try to tie in my "professional passion projects" to what the other person is talking about too; I've found it helps create a bond!

For example, I was getting coffee with someone in UX who was talking about some work she did in UX and Sustainability and that was a perfect opportunity for me to share some of the research I have done on AI and Sustainability - she was really excited to hear about it, and it started a whole new branch of a conversation where we got to talk more in depth about our shared interests in Sustainability and how we try to advocate for it in our respective jobs.

Great insights Ben!  From my experience, one thing that I learned over time when you have a coffee talk discussion, or attend conferences that I later adopted was how much preparation was important.  Not just by researching who's going to be there and what they do, but also reflecting on yourself and asking yourself what you want out of the encounter.  Looking inward to see what you want out of the experience makes your conversation flow naturally!
