CAMM memory speed in a 7780
Hi,
I'm interested in configuring and buying a precision 7780.
I'm somewhat curious about the indicated speed of the CAMM modules:
Why is the speed of the CAMM modules decreasing from the 8 to 128 GB modules from 5600 MT/s via 5200 MT/s to 3600 MT/s?

Please look at the Dell 7780 Specifications. The difference is the CAMM vs DDR 5 and this explains the Speed drop. Which you pay with a higher price.
Up to now I could not experience any speed drops with 64 GB DDR 5 Ram. May be this relates always to a Laptop where speed is dropped ( Graphic & CPU) to accommodate the heat capacity in relation to power / battery consumption. By far, a better performance has a desktop…

I got his information from the specification.
I would be interested why the speed drop happens with the CAMM but apparently not with the DDR memory.
And yes, I know that laptops have more problems with heat dissipation. I can hear it writing this text with my 128 GB Dell 7740.

Indeed CAM Speed is lower than der DDR5 adapter modules. This is a question to Dell Engineers. For all modules it is based on DDR5 storage chips, this means, it is a question how good has Dell them integrated on to the CAM module. Since it’s a new development, I guess, they have had not the experience to make them better. In my perspective I would stay on DDR 5 Adapter which provides you more flexibility what RAM Option you might get installed.
Concerning the Dell 7740, which I had as well and is still running, the difference are not much in your working environment concerning speed performance it’s just my feeling. I would recommend to clean up your heat pipe and paste the CPU & GPU new this brings down the noise quite intensive. May be the next Generation of Dell Precisions might provide a better performance boost, let’s see what comes next.
