Contactless Smartcard reader (ControlVault3) Windows 11 and YubiKey

Latitude 5410

Latitude 5410

Hey everyone,

I've been using a YubiKey for FIDO2 PassKey authentication and recently discovered that there's an alternative palmrest available for the Latitude 5410, which includes an integrated contactless smartcard reader. Since I had success using a USB-connected contactless smartcard reader from Trust (which supports the ISO14443A/B standard), I decided to upgrade and purchase the Dell palmrest with the integrated reader.

After installing the necessary drivers (ControlVault3) via Dell Command—I've also tried manually downloading the software from Dell—the yellow exclamation marks in my device manager disappeared. However, when I rebooted and attempted to use my YubiKey by placing it near the reader (right next to the touchpad where the contactless icon is), Windows 11 recognized the YubiKey as a device ready to be paired rather than as a smartcard (see attached screenshot).

I've searched the forums and found a similar post mentioning that Dell's contactless smartcard reader might operate differently than expected. Can anyone help me understand why the contactless smartcard reader driver isn’t recognizing my YubiKey 5C NFC as a smartcard? Any insights or solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Chris

A small update: I have done some research and found two protocols, NDEF and APDU. My YubiKey 5C NFC supports both. It seems that the Dell ControlVault3's NFC reader prefers (or perhaps only supports) the NDEF protocol for reading/writing NFC tags and/or transmitting small amounts of data via NFC. I hope that Dell can configure the integrated contactless smartcard reader to force the use of the APDU protocol instead, which appears to be the common protocol for smartcard usage.

Update No. 2: I found another one with the exact issue: Dell-Community-Forum. But what will be the official solution Dell can provide to help?

Hey Alex,

not want I wanted to hear. I wasn't able to speak or write with an professionel who is well known of this implementation. Broadcom programmed something for Dell and provided a firmware tool. But dell isn't interested to share it with you. They want their own non-standard implementation of contactless smartcards. At the end I send the bezel back to Dell and got my money back after weeks of waiting.
